From the Desk of John Rourke – October 1st, 2015

Russia is now conducting military operations in Syria and reportedly is bombing locations where ISIS is not located. I don’t know whether to trust the MSM for the truth about the locales of the bombing raids but I am concerned. Tensions seem to be set to escalate quickly between Russia and the US. Russia has warned the US to not fly in Syrian airspace. Russia supports the Assad government while the US supports the rebels fighting against Assad.

Not a very good equation for success.

I just finished watching a special – “It Is About Islam” on BlazeTV talking about Islam and its involvement in terrorism and ISIS. While our President has famously said “ISIL is not Islamic.” the documentary did an excellent job covering the history of the radical Islamic movement and their 20 year plan to take over the world. Based on the documentary it appears that the plan’s pieces have fallen into place.

I have received praises for not being a fear monger or preaching doom and gloom – but I speak my mind and try to use common sense, logic, and facts. Look at what is happening all over the world. Radical Islam is a threat to the world. Look at the pure evil that permeates it’s very existence. Maybe its effect on our way of life will be minimal for years to come but it will come to our cities, towns, and neighborhoods.

20 years from now what will our history look like?

Bugging Out in a Tree? Really?

The typical outdoorsman will simply take a trip to the local Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shop, and purchase a tree stand to improve his hunting vantage points. For those who are prepping for long-term survival in the wilderness, a tree stand could potentially save their lives in certain situations and even provide shelter in a pinch.

Tree stands made for long-term survival will have to be built from scratch to not only blend into its surroundings, but also contain features specific to the locale and situation.

The Basics

No matter what you plan to use your tree stand for, building it will require some universal tools and a few specialty ones depending on your final goal. One general characteristic of all tree stands is that it needs to be anywhere from 25 to 30 off the ground.

You will be working at heights that can cause severe injury (or even death) in the event of a fall. Practice all safety precautions when building your tree stand. Consider renting an extension ladder to make the job easier and more efficient. It will provide easy access to the lumber and tools necessary for construction. You’ll have the opportunity to build your main tree stand and a secondary one with the time and energy you’ll save.

Lumber can be had for cheap if you exercise a little due diligence. Locate small lumberyards online and speak with the manager or owner in-person. Show up with your truck and cash, so they know you’re serious about getting a deal done. There’s a good chance the yard has a few distressed bundles of wood that are infested with bugs or may have been returned by unhappy customers for whatever reason.

The bug problem is easily remedied by freezing the wood or sealing it in plastic for a month or two. Some yard managers may even give you the lumber for free just to get rid of it.

wildlife observation point – raised blind

The Tree House

Keep in mind, not all tree stands have to be attached to a tree. One blogger referred to a 20-foot freestanding model as “The Condo.” The small dwelling with a roof and enough space to sleep, sits atop stilts made of pressure-treated wood. For good measure, the stand is secured by four-feet-deep mobile home anchors. This ensures a sturdy climb, and the ability to withstand high winds.

A tree stand like this will take time and a little more money to build. Pick up a book on how to build children’s tree houses. The plans are very similar for building a dwelling-type tree stand, and of course will emphasize safety because children will ultimately be playing in it. Once completed, you have instantly created yourself a place to locate and hunt deer, a look-out tower, and even a shelter in the event of catastrophic flooding.

Your Cover

A tree may appear perfect for building your stand in the summer. But come autumn, all of its leaves will fall off, leaving your tree stand completely exposed. A simple, inexpensive way to handle this is by locating an oak, beech or evergreen tree. These species hold their leaves longer as temperatures drop come late September.

Cut limbs from these trees and attach them to the naked limbs of the tree your stand is located. Use zip ties to attach them. If your tree doesn’t have many limbs, attach flag brackets to the tree and let the limbs hang from them. This will keep your tree stand hidden from animals and will also disguise it from other people.

A store-bought tree stand will suffice for those taking the occasional deer hunting trip. But a little extra effort is necessary for long-term solutions.

Lucid Dreaming | Some questions on SSILD

I know that in the SSILD you must concentry on a sense between hearing, feeling and seeing l but you have to do only one sense or all sense a time and second if I choose only the visual sense on what do I must concentrate on the black of the backlids , on the phospens? Ecc.

And is OK that in the auditory sense there's nothing to hear? Because at night time there's pretty nothing to hear at

All the pieces of the “declining of the United States” continue to fall into place. A Minnesota court just made a ruling calling BB guns firearms. Ridiculous.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Recently saw a magazine with a featured article on modern hollow handled knives. These newer designs are extremely strong, expensive,  but do not possess the same weakness the older models have. The idea of the hollow handle was popularized by Rambo in the movie First Blood.  Love that knife and have thought of buying one just to have. These older cheaper hollow handled knives just will not take the level of punishment full tang knives will.

Rambo-first-blood-forest-knife

One knife that I have been looking at is the Schrade Extreme Survival Knife. It is a hollow handle knife however it is made from a single piece of steel.

Lucid Dreaming | Some Interesting Science on Lucid Dreaming

I just read a popular science magazine. It's a Swedish magazine called "Illustrerad Vetenskap" in English I guess the translation would be "Illustrated Science". And I read an article about lucid dreaming and I thought I knew most science on lucid dreaming but I quickly realized that I did not.

I thought I would just share some of the content here in order to give some value to you guys and sort out the information to myself.

So here we go!

According to the article, if you are frequently lucid dreaming you are a good problem solver and probably a very self-reflective and analytical person.

This description fits me very well, I am right now writing an article in order to find solutions to potential problems in my practise and if you know my writing self-reflection and analytical are my middle names...

But the claim of lucid dreamers being more logical was based on a experiement where 68 people were selected at random at University of Lincoln and then they split these into two groups of people based on how often they said they experienced lucid dreams. Then they performed a serie of logical tests one where they let the students see three words such as "stone", "line" and "ice" and the students where supposed to find one word that they could link with each of these words. I'll write the right answer at the bottom of this post, see if you could solve it. ;)

The experiment showed that people with atleast one lucid dream a month performed better at these logical tests at the easy tasks the difference was 29% but in the really difficult tests the difference was even bigger with the lucid dreamers scoring 79% better. Go oneironatus!

So I was thinking maybe practising logical problemsolving can increase lucidity rate naturally?

However, soon we will have a lucid dreaming machine that can bring lucidity at the flick of a switch (which kind of would destroy the beautiful art of awareness practise, but hey modern technology have already done that right?) But at the University of Goethe in Germany they transfered a light electric pulse to the test-subject's brain with 25-40 Hz while they were in REM-sleep and when person woke up they reported that they had experienced a lucid dream!

The article also discussed the fact that normal dreams alone improves learning because they enhance procedural-memory such which is useful in processes like practising sports and other things.

Dreams are also important for us because we need to to handle emotions in real life and therefore function i social situations.
Dreams also help us work through negative emotions and makes us less nervous and anxious in real life.

So in summary: Improved problem solving might be a way to improve lucidity rate, maybe we have a real and actually working lucidity machine soon, and if you want to learn faster don't forget about the sleep, and if you need therapy don't forget to get good sleep.

So as an active lucid dreamer we can proudly say "We are a little smarter than the average person.."

yeahsciencebitch.jpg

I guess that was all.

Thanks for reading :)

Minimal Mighty Mite

If you’re getting started building your own ham radio gear, it’s hard to imagine a more low-tech transmitter than the Mighty Mite, but [Paul Hodges, KA5WPL] took it one step further and rolled his own variable capacitor. (That’s the beer can with tape and alligator clips that you see on the left.)

A Mighty Mite is barely a radio at all. One transistor, capacitor, crystal and inductor in the form of a bunch of wire wrapped around a pill bottle form a minimalist oscillator, and then by keying this on and off with a switch, you’re sending Morse code. [Bill Meara], of the Soldersmoke Podcast, has been a passionate advocate of the Mighty Mite, suggesting that it can be made by scrounging the 3.57954 MHz colorburst crystal from an old analog TV set, which tunes the radio to a legal frequency for ham radio operators. (It will also probably work with other low-MHz crystals from your junkbox, but it won’t necessarily be legal.)

michigan_mighty_mite_schematicIf the crystal is “easily” scavengeable, and the rest of the radio is easily home-made, the tuning capacitor (obtainable from old AM/FM radios) can become the sticking point. So [Paul] cut up two aluminum “beverage” cans, wrapped the inner one in electrical tape, hooked up wires and made his own variable capacitor. By sliding the cans in or out so that more or less of them overlap, he can tune the radio to exactly the crystal’s natural frequency.

If you’re interested in building a Mighty Mite, you should definitely look at the topic on Soldersmoke. There are more build instructions online as well as plans for an optional filter to take off the harmonics if you’re feeling ambitious.

If you’re not a Morse code wiz, we can’t help but note that you could replace the key with a simple FET (we’d use a 2N7000, but whatever) and then you’ve got the radio under microcontroller control. Scavenge through Hackaday’s recent Morse code projects for ideas, and we’re sure you’ll come up with something good.

Lucid Dreaming | SSILD question

I'm very new to using SSILD, but the technique seems effective. The visuals quite quickly become very 3D. With the current form, you have visual, auditory, and tactile input. If we were to add olfactory and gustatory so as to include all the main senses, would it be even more so? Or are those additions, do you think, overkill and just muddy the waters? thanks for responses

Mentioned how he has talked to several financial advisors one of which he particularly speaks highly of. The gist of the conversation was he believes the stock market needs a large correction. He believes the market will at a minimum drop below 15,000. He also said his guy believes the Federal debt will only be paid off due to massive inflation and the devaluing of the US dollar.

He is not aware of my beliefs in preparedness. He also has a cabin up in the mountains with a good amount of acreage. He just might make a good prospect for the group.

A few thoughts on EMP protection

Quite often I receive questions and comments related to EMP protection. Let me start by saying I am not an expert on EMP. I will also tell you that I have talked to some very knowledgeable people when it comes to EMP and electronics. For me the answer to what will happen if there is an EMP attack is rather simple:

No one knows for sure.

It’s true. No one knows exactly what will happen. Different “experts” have different opinions.

When it comes to protection….what is that saying? Opinions are like #$$%&@!$! Some say microwaves will work, others say they won’t. Some say a metal galvanized trash can will work. Others say they won’t. Let me tell you what I believe provides the BEST chance for success for EMP protection:
ruspuzzleRussian Matryoshka dolls. OK, not literally but it’s the concept. Storing your items to be protected inside a metal box, inside another metal box, inside ANOTHER metal box – this provides the best chance for success. These metal boxes must not touch each other. This separation can be accomplished via packing foam, paper towels, bible wrap, sponges, etc.

The idea here is to provide multiple layers that the EMP pulse would have to penetrate – increasing your chances of the items survival.

One example of this would be to take a radio, wrap it in bubble wrap, and place it inside a sealed Mylar bag. Then wrap the bag with a t-shirt. This is then placed inside a metal pencil box. Now – the metal pencil box is surrounded by large car washing sponges – and then placed inside a .50 caliber ammo can.

Get the idea?

—————–

So, will it work?

I hate to say it, but…….No one knows for sure.

This use of multiple barriers provides an excellent chance of success with minimal expense.

Lucid Dreaming | Random lucid experience a few days ago, bringing me back into practising LDing

Hello everyone!

I feel that this kind of post is quite common on the forums, although I wouldn't know as, like you might have guessed, I kind of gave up lucid dreaming once again a few months ago after getting amazing recall in my dream journal but despite the amazing recall, getting no lucids. Before anyone says that I was expecting too much from too little, I started practising lucid dreaming back in March 2014 and had went for long periods of time practising with a few breaks here and there, but still to this day, I've had no lucid dreams as a result of DILD/WILD.

Anyway, the other day, I was at my dad's house for the weekend with my brother, and on Sunday night, I finally had a random DILD (at least I think it was a DILD) as well as what I think were a few tiny DEILDs as a result of me waking up due to my dad watching TV and waking me up a few times in the early morning.

The DILD was very short and I can barely remember anything in it, obviously because of me having given up a few months ago and stopped keeping my dream journal going, but I know it went along the lines of me approaching a building and having a thought while standing in front of it of 'Hmm...this doesn't seem right...' and then immediately after that it was as though my subconscious wanted me to realise it was a dream because I started thinking 'Wait...this is a dream and there's absolutely no other explanation for it!' because in a lot of my other non-lucids in my practising before I took a break, I tended to recall from the dream that my dream-self thought some things were odd in the dream (e.g. me buying cigarettes) but I never put my finger on it. This time, however, it was like my subconscious wanted me to affirm it was a dream as soon as possible to avoid letting another lucid chance slip away from me.

Anyway, I'm not really sure where I was going with this post other than me just wanting to tell someone about my dream experiences. I'm just hoping that this now means once I get my journal back up and running, I'll be more on the ball in my unconscious dreaming state that I can actually notice the odd/out of place qualities of my dreams unlike before, and thus actually have regular lucids. I'm not expecting much, but I'd like to have some kind of lucid dream that isn't just because I got woken up by something in the night and was luckily able to DEILD and is as a result of me putting effort into having them.

If anyone has managed to read through all of that, thank you so much! :D

Lucid Dreaming | Asking a lucid dream how to lucid dream

Hello all,

My first post here.

My girlfriend and I have just stepped into the world of lucid dreaming and are absorbing everything we can about it through books, podcasts, websites, etc. We've both had our first lucid dreams. I had my first one a week ago and was able to:

...tell myself at the start to remain calm so that I wouldn't wake up
...stop a martial arts master from hurting an old college friend who was training with him
...ask the master why he was so angry (he gave me a cryptic response). It felt profound to do this.
...transform the way the outside of a model of an observatory looked like some sort of amateur wizard
...fly and feel the wind rushing by me
...stop bullets from hitting me and pick them out of the air where I had them hanging JUST like in The Matrix (they were still warm from being fired)
...see an extraordinary dream mountain (I intend to visit it at some point)

It was, well, a profound experience.

My girlfriend was transported to a Victorian era time in hers and was aware of dancing and literally vibrating with joy. She felt the fabric of her dress and chose to look outside the window (at a rather uninteresting scene). We traced the start of hers back to me whispering to her while she was asleep, "You're aware that you're dreaming." I said it twice, and the second time she barely responded to me but was still asleep. But in her dream the lights came up and had a very nice yellow gaslight like quality--everything became colorful and vibrant from what it was before she became lucid, she became aware of the music playing that she was dancing to, and she told herself, "Oh, so this is what it's like [to lucid dream]."

Of course we are hooked and are anxious to explore all of the amazing possibilities.

Anyway, to the question! I have not had a second lucid dream, although my girlfriend has. We are using the technique of staring at your hands and repeating, "The next time I am dreaming, I will see my hands and realize I am dreaming" technique. Although mine actually came from waking in the morning and the intent of going back to into the dream to help my old college friend. The hand technique is working for her but not for me I don't think.

So I was wondering...

Has anyone tried asking a dream or a dream figure, "Show me how to have lucid dreams every night." I was going to make that a goal in my next lucid dream. If you've tried this or something like it, what were the results?

Thanks. :)

Gear Review: Alocs Alcohol Stove

Alcohol stoves are very popular with backpackers and campers who look for lightweight cook systems that burn inexpensive fuel. There are no moving parts, no electronics, no valves, and no pipes. Simplicity. They are also inexpensive and can be made from common household materials if so desired.

Alcohol stoves are mostly used for boiling water for preparing freeze dried and dehydrated foods. Fuel selection varies with denatured alcohol being very popular. The biggest drawback of the alcohol stove is it is very susceptible to wind.

GEAR-REVIEW-Alocs-Alcohol-Stove

I have been using the Alocs alcohol camp stove for the past several weeks and have found that it works very well.

On with the review…….

Construction/Build: The Alocs is made primarily of aluminum and copper. Cosmetic appearance is very nice with no noticeable machining marks, scratches, etc. The coating of the pot stand looks very nice and smooth.

Everything fit together as intended with the fuel cavity cap screwing on tightly. The screw cap has an internal o-ring so the stove can be stored away fully fueled.

alocs (1)

Fuel Options: Although many types of fuel can be used with an alcohol stove I have settled on the yellow bottle HEET. This is 99% Methanol. It is easy to store, pack, and dispense into the Alocs stove. Other fuels include rubbing alcohol, Isopropanol(pure),  grain alcohol, and denatured alcohol. Many of these can create hazardous fumes to a well ventilated area is the best location for usage.

alocs-2

Performance:  Performance tests of any alcohol stove will vary depending on wind conditions and fuel. As I only use HEET that will be the one constant in any tests I have done thus far and moving forward.

Performance is generally measured in how long it takes to boil water. In my testing of the Alocs alcohol stove 1 cup of water would start to boil in around 8 minutes. Two cups took about 12 minutes.

I poured a good amount of HEET into the fuel cavity with no measurement. I am guessing 2 – 2.5 ounces total. I let it burn until all fuel was consumed. It took nearly 30 minutes. I was surprised that it listed that long and consider it an excellent burn time. A 12 ounce bottle of HEET should last close to 6 hours. Not bad for around $1.50.

20150718_201328

Extinguishing the flame is simple. There is an adjustable flame regulator which is placed on top of the Alocs. It has a sliding cover which can be opened and closed to adjust flame intensity. I have never used it for that purpose rather I leave it closed and just place it on top of the unit when finished and the flame goes out.

The Alocs alcohol stove also comes with a small drawstring fabric carrying bag. Nice to keep everything organized.

The Alocs was my introduction to alcohol stoves. I can understand why so many hikers and backpackers use them. Simple, lightweight, reliable and effective.

The Alocs Alcohol Stove is available from GearBest.com. Price is generally under $15 with free shipping. Please remember that with GearBest.com shipping time is a few weeks due to ordering direct from China.

It’s worth it.

Lucid Dreaming | Dream snippets?

OK, so in my attempts at WILDing, i always encounter something and im unsure exactly what I should really be doing with these little mites. What happens is as I am attempting a WILD (or a SSILD) I have these random brief (5-10 second) mini dreams. I remain concious and then i return alert and continue my mantra. a little while later and more of these short dream snippets occur.

Im definatley not lucid when viewing these and Im unsure if I should interact with them or passively observe them and treat them as 'noise' into the decent of sleep.

They are like actual real dreams and now swirly patterns and this is why i dont know if they are HI or not. Ive read that if you observe these dreamlets and let them play out then you will lose consciousness. Ive googled for dreamlets and dream snippets but not mush info

So should I just ignore these mini dreams and actively try to interact with them? Are they dreams that would completely form when REM kicks in. Thanks for all the advice as this is a piece of the puzzle that I cant nail down yet

Ezzo :-_)

Mid-Priced Hardware Gets Serious About Software Defined Radio

Regular Hackaday readers are used to seeing the hacks that use a cheap USB TV dongle as a software defined radio (SDR). There’s plenty of software that will work with them including the excellent GNU Radio software. However, the hardware is pretty bare-bones. Without modifications, the USB dongle won’t get lower frequencies.

There’s been plenty of other SDR radios available but they’ve had a much heftier price tag. But we recently noticed the SDRPlay RSP, and they now have US distribution. The manufacturer says it will receive signals with 12-bits of resolution over the range of 100 kHz to 2 GHz with an 8MHz bandwidth. The USB cable supplies power and a connection to the PC. The best part? An open API that supports Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, and will even work on a Raspberry Pi (and has GNU Radio support, too).

If you are like us, your brain is already spinning thinking of the hacks you can do with a fairly inexpensive (about $150) receiver that has that kind of range. Of course, you could use it as just a receiver, but it could do a lot more. For example, the second video below shows a ham that uses the device as a panadapter (a ham tool that amounts to a spectrum analyzer that visually monitors the entire ham radio band for activity).

The device has eight different front end filters that it selects depending on your chosen frequency. We haven’t had a chance to try one yet (stay tuned for that), but the specs look impressive–especially for the price. When you think that we’ve seen cheap SDRs make test equipment and even passive radar, you can only imagine what the community will dream up using these boxes.

Deep Sweep: A Home Made SigInt Platform

Signals Intelligence (SigInt) isn’t something that you normally associate with home hackers, but the Deep Sweep project is looking to change that: it is a balloon platform that captures radio signals in the stratosphere, particularly conversations between drones and satellites. Created by three students at the Frank Ratchye Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie-Mellon, Deep Sweep is a platform that is attached to a balloon and which captures signals over a wide range of frequencies, logging them for later analysis. The current version captures data on three frequency bands: LF/HF (10KHz-30KHz), UHF (650 – 1650MHz) and SHF (10-20GHz). The latter are often the bands used for satellite links between drones and satellites. They are difficult to intercept from the ground, as the signals are directed upwards towards the satellite. By creating a platform that can fly several kilometers above the earth, they are hoping to be able to capture some of this elusive traffic.

So far, the team has made two flights in Europe, both of which encountered technical issues. The first had a battery fault and only captured 10 minutes of data, and the second flew further than expected and ended up in Belarus, a country that isn’t likely to welcome this kind of thing. Fortunately, they were able to recover the balloon and are working on future launches in Europe and the USA. It will be interesting to see how the Department of Homeland Security feels about this.

From the Desk of John Rourke – September 25th, 2015

I have been working on some of the internal workings of this website trying to figure out why multiple people have expressed issues with the comment system. I just changed the software that handles the comments but not sure of that will do anything. In my own testing sometimes when a comment is left it takes longer than it should to show up – but it does show up.

With the many suggestions given on reasons why traffic may be down – I plan to change the “theme” of the website. The theme is simply the appearance. The one I use is rather complex. Additionally I have posts dating all the way back to 2011 and all that content is taking up a lot of space. I am likely to archive some of it and just make it available as a download possibly. This will free up server space and should lend to better performance.

I will certainly be looking at many of the other suggestions given as well. Thanks to everyone is contributed.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

My local newspaper printed a cartoon depicting Ben Carson stating he wouldn’t support a Muslim as President, with two members of the KKK watching him saying – “I would vote for him if he was white.”

I didn’t find it funny at all. Amazingly most responses were in support of the cartoon providing their ridiculous opinions that all Republicans are racists and that they “can’t believe that anyone would think like Carson nowadays”.

Just another sign of the times. BTW – I haven’t bought that paper in years.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Remember this scene from The Terminator? Gives me goose bumps every time I watch it.

The Terminator

“There’s a storm coming…..”

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

As I go through and monitor a variety of Internet  and Facebook survival forums I am beginning to see a repetitive question: Does anyone else out there just have a gut feeling something bad is going to happen – – – – and soon?

I  know this has been said for many years but the frequency I am seeing it now is pretty interesting. A sign of the times.

Free Nuclear Threat DVD……

Last week I mentioned a totally free DVD on nuclear terrorism that was available. Here is another one that I would recommend.  The Nuclear Threat Initiative is offering a free DVD video called “Last Best Chance“.

The video’s website provides the following description of the film:

Last Best Chance is a docudrama that shows the threat posed by vulnerable nuclear weapons and materials around the world and underscores what the stakes are.

In the movie, al Qaeda operatives organize three separate operations aimed at getting nuclear weapons. The material is then fabricated into three crude nuclear weapons by small groups of trained terrorists, who have recruited bomb-making experts to help them manufacture their weapons.

Governments around the world discover clues to the plot, but are unable to uncover the scheme before the weapons are en route to their destinations. The film clearly demonstrates that the hardest job for terrorists is gaining control of a nuclear weapon or material. Because the governments had failed to take sufficient action to secure or destroy the nuclear weapons material, they are helpless to prevent an attack.

The film stars Fred Thompson and features an epilogue moderated by Tom Brokaw.

Lucid Dreaming | The PRO's routine for lucidity (The ALL in ONE way)

This post/routine is inspired by Dream Yoga, its the original way of LUCID DREAMING.
I don't know if such posts were already posted but here it is;

||| If you want to have GREAT recall of your dreams and so rise your chances to become lucid, every night before you sleep imagine (review) your past day (not necessary in a chronologic/linear way but it's better if you can). This builds a "muscle" of memory needed for lucid dreams. When you start you will become aware how we live with so little awareness, so you will not be able to recall everything. But with time you will. You will live in greater awareness of every moment. So it's like ADA or mindfulness. Of course, because in buddhism and dream yoga it is the key for everything.

||| Do the same in the morning! Don't move and begin to review, recall the dreams you had. Remember its just like a gym, with time you are better and better :D

||| In the day practice reality checks or ADA. Everything that makes you question reality, everything that makes you AWARE and live in lucidity. A simple reality checks are enough.

||| Meditate: For dream yoga or lucid dreams the best meditations are the focus meditation like the "calm abiding" meditation (samatha) or zhiné (it is the same just different names). You can focus on your breathe or an external object, you can even meditate on a mental image like a light ball between your eybrows or in your chest. The importance is the focus of course.

If you practice this you will be immersed in an aware/consciouss life so your dreams will be the same: conscious and lucid. You have chances to become lucid by doing only one of them but if you do all of them your chances are the highest. I don't think that you can fail, it requires only a discipline and persistance.

Building and Operating a Makeshift Wood Oven

This post originally appeared HERE on ModernSurvivalOnline.com.

Introduction

One of the basic needs for any survival situation is a means of cooking food.

The most abundant fuel available is wood.  There are many ways to use wood to cook food…the most common being a camp fire or the “rocket stove”.  However, these methods are not the most fuel efficient, and a lot of heat is lost during cooking, resulting in excessive fuel consumption.

A more fuel efficient method is to build a wood fuel oven.  A wood fuel oven can be made out of a variety of materials…metal, brick, or cinder blocks are ideal, as long as you can make the oven air tight.

smoker, survival stove, oven, SHTF, TSHTF, TEOTWAWKI, economic collapse, food storage

Smoker

Understanding How Fire “Breathes”

Before building your oven, it’s important to understand the three aspects which regulate the burn rate and temperature of fire:

1) Available fuel

2) Escape rate of exhaust (smoke)

3) Available oxygen

Much like a car engine, the performance of your oven will vary based upon how well you regulate the above three components.

Smoke should be channeled away from your fire rapidly to prevent the fire from choking on its own exhaust.  Restricting the flow of smoke out of the oven should never be used to regulate the fire.  Excessive smoke in your oven will make food taste bitter.  However, allowing smoke to escape too quickly will also allow heat to escape quicker, reducing the ability of your oven to retain heat and conserve fuel.

Most traditional non-electric cooking and heating appliances work by regulating the flow of fuel.  However, unless working with a pellet stove, it is rather difficult to regulate the “flow” of wood.

That leaves us with the only remaining aspect of fire, oxygen.

This can be controlled by creating a damper which will restrict the flow of oxygen into the oven.

Gathering the Parts

You need the following components to build your oven:

Oven Chamber

Thermometer

Fire Box/Grate

Food Rack(s)

Damper

Exhaust Door/Lid

Oven Door

Depending on materials: assorted hardware, exhaust pipe

 wood stove, survival oven, preparedness

Oven chamber

As mentioned previously, the oven can be built out of many different materials.  Suggested materials include: Food grade 55 gallon drum, old charcoal kettle grill, brick and mortar, cinder blocks and mortar, or even a cardboard box lined with aluminum foil.  When all doors/dampers/etc are closed, the oven needs to be air tight, so that you can extinguish the fire when you are finished cooking without having to pour water over the fire.

Thermometer

A standard oven or grill thermometer.  One of the “dial” thermometers which have a metal probe and do not contain mercury.

Fire box/grate

The fire box/grate should be elevated so that ash from the burning wood can fall below the fire and prevent smothering the burning wood and preventing the flow of oxygen.

Food rack

The food rack should also be elevated, and can be placed either above or next to the fire box.  A grill rack out of a propane grill works great for this.

Air Damper

The damper should be adjustable, but can be rather simplistic, such as a sliding piece of metal.  For optimal air flow the damper should allow oxygen to flow into the oven from beneath the fire, or on the opposite side of the oven from the exhaust and food rack.  The important thing is that the damper is adjustable, and makes the oven air tight when closed.  If need be, the damper can also double as an access door to the fire box.

Exhaust door/lid

The exhaust door/lid, much like the damper, can be simplistic, such as a sliding piece of metal.  Once again, the important thing is that the exhaust door/lid is adjustable, and makes the oven air tight when closed.

Oven door

The oven door should be large enough and located in a position to pull your food in and out with ease.  When closed, the door should make the oven air tight.

Miscellaneous hardware

It’s important not to forget all the hardware you’ll need to assemble your makeshift oven.  This includes screws, nuts, bolts, nails, etc.

Assembling your Oven

When assembling your oven, the location of all components is critical.  Your oven should encourage proper air flow by locating the air damper and exhaust door/lid on opposite sides of the oven, as pictured.  Your damper should always be as low as possible, and the exhaust should be at the highest part of the oven.  Remember, smoke (and heat) rises.

Try to design the oven so that while the entire oven is filled with heat, the smoke is quickly channeled around and away from the food.  Your fire should always be offset from your food.  This will not only prevent the food from becoming bitter with too much smoke flavor, it will also help prevent the food from burning.

Your thermometer should be level with your food, so that you can monitor the cooking temperature.

Finally, and I can’t reinforce this enough, make sure that when all doors/lids/vents/etc are closed, the oven is as air tight as possible.

Using your Oven

The makeshift wood oven is very similar to the operation of a conventional oven…warm up the oven, put the food in, wait, pull the food out of the oven when done, and turn off the oven.

First, stack your wood inside the oven on the wood grate.  Generally, stacking the wood in a crisscross square is best for long burns.  Use a small starter log stick for easiest starting of the fire.  Starting off, you’ll want your air damper and exhaust wide open for maximum air flow when lighting the fire and warming up the oven.  If you find it takes a long time to warm up, you may want to try closing your exhaust partially to help retain heat.

Monitor your thermometer.  When the temperature is where you want it, close your air damper most of the way, only allowing a small amount of air into the oven.  Also partially close your exhaust to help retain heat.  While it takes a large amount of oxygen to get your oven warmed up, it won’t take very much at all to maintain your temperature.

Keeping your oven running will require constant supervision until you get the hang of it.  Every makeshift oven is different, and will require a lot of trial and error.  Put in your food, and keep an eye on the temperature.  If the temperature starts falling, open the air damper more, allowing additional oxygen to reach the fire, and close your exhaust slightly.  If the temperature keeps rising, close your air damper more.  Keep an eye on the edges of your oven door…if you see smoke starting to come out, open your exhaust more.  The idea is, keep the smoke flowing out of the oven, but keep as much of the heat in as possible.  Just like a regular oven, keep the oven door closed as much as possible, to keep the heat in.  A general rule I’ve found is that exhaust should be double the size of the air damper.

It helps to have a temperature probe handy, so you can check the internal temperature of your food.  Making sure your food has reached the minimum internal temperature is critical, otherwise your food may make you ill.

When you are finished with your oven, turn if “off” by closing all doors/vents/lids/etc.  Normally I will leave the oven in the closed state until I’m ready to use it again.

Caring for your Oven

When cleaning your oven, be sure not to use any harmful chemicals.  Generally, water and soap should be sufficient to clean your oven.  You may notice over time a black soot buildup inside your oven.  This is okay, as the soot will help to “season” the oven, and actually make your food taste better.

If you know you won’t be using your oven for a long time, it is advisable to completely wash and dry the oven after it has cooled, then store it in an airtight plastic bag to prevent dust or mold.  Always wash and dry the oven again after removing it from storage.

I hope that you have found this useful.  These oven plans have been adapted from the “Ugly Drum Smoker” and uses a similar cooking technique.  My custom built smoker uses this design, and can be used as a charcoal smoker or a wood oven.

Lucid Dreaming | Accessing subconscious to instigate LDs

This is a perspective that I have developed to better understand LD/OBE and how they relate to one another. Maybe it will prod some thoughts of your own. It may already be out there on the net, but I’m going to share it anyway.

The 5-pronged reality of dreaming. There are five spokes to the dreaming wheel. Daytime consciousness(DtC), daydreaming consciousness(DdC), night-dreaming consciousness(NdC), lucid dreaming consciousness(LdC), and OBE consciousness(OBEC). They are all gradients of awareness, but they all stem from the same source, your consciousness.

DtC: You are aware that you are in physical reality, and you are totally immersed in the environment. DdC: You are aware that you are in Non-Physical Reality (NPR), but you are not totally immersed in your environment. NdC: You are not aware that you are in NPR, but you are totally immersed in your environment. LdC: You are aware that you are in NPR, are totally immersed in your environment, but have only partial access to conscious memories. And OBEC: A combination of the above: You are aware that you are in NPR; you are totally immersed in your environment; and you have complete access to your memory.

On each end of the spectrum, you have the two bookends: DtC which is full physical awareness and OBEC which is full NPR awareness. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, your level of consciousness is the thread running through.

I think if people looked at LD/OBE from the perspective of pure consciousness, there would be a lot less infighting over whether OBE is a subset of LD or if LD is a subset of OBE. Because there can be only two realities: The physical and the non-physical. So why do people keep trying to break the non-physical into separate paradigms when they are all gradients of non-physical consciousness.

Consciousness abides in the non-physical, not in the physical. Of course, most scientists would say that consciousness resides physically within the brain. But as far as I know, no scientists has ever dissected a brain and cut out the part labelled consciousness. So, I will stick to my perspective for the moment.

To my way of thinking, that means that all thought-related activity resides in the NPR. This means stray thoughts, memories, thought experiments, daydreams, night dreams, etc., all reside in the non-physical.

All the above lead me to the conclusion that various techniques to influence the subconscious, which has direct access to NdC, can best be approached by accessing the NPR directly. As an example, if you daydream a scenario, you can input RCs and Dream Signs into the daydream. This should result in directly training the subconscious to react the same way during night dreams, because you are inputting the RCs and Dream Signs directly into NPR. Doing such training from within NPR should have a more direct influence on your subconscious because that is where it resides, and you are using symbology (pictures, emotions) which is the language of the subconscious.

Using words in physical reality has less effect, because your subconscious has to translate the word metaphors into symbol metaphors that it is able to better understand (or it has to rely purely on the intent behind your words). That is why mantras before you go to sleep are really for you to hear in order to generate intent, not for the mind. It’s the person’s intent behind the mantra that penetrates the subconscious, which is why visualizations are important to incorporate into MILD techniques. The visualization (subconscious language) along with the intent behind the mantra are what have the desired effect.

I don’t want to go into this ad nauseam, but this idea can be extrapolated into other techniques, etc.

I’ve been running these ideas through my head and wanted to share them with people on the same wavelength. You might not agree with my perspective, but you’ll at least know where I’m coming from. Sharing them with my friends/relatives just gets me the understanding nod of the head before they change the conversation back to the 49ers’ last game or to what Aunt Sally bought at the flea market.

Bottom line, I think if we recognize to what extent NPR extends into our world, we have a better chance of coming up with techniques that cut to the chase and optimally instigate LDs. I have a couple I am working on, but there’s no point in sharing until I pin down the specifics to make them fruitful.

Thanks for reading.

From the Desk of John Rourke – September 23rd, 2015

JohnP sent in a link to a news story where a school board in New Jersey had to rule on changing the school holiday schedule based on the petitioning of the local Muslim community.

Here are a few excerpts and the entire article can be read HERE:

A school-board meeting in New Jersey descended into chaos when a room full of angry Muslim parents were denied a last-minute request by its members.

Tempers were so raw last Thursday when the Jersey City Board of Education decided not to close schools for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that officials had to order security to “take charge.” The holiday falls on Sept. 24.

“We’re going to be the majority soon!” said one woman into a microphone, WNBC-TV reported Sept. 17.

Muslim parents are permitted to take their children out of school for an excused religious absence with no penalty, WNBC reported.

While Muslim students received an excused absence Jewish leaders requested the same consideration and failed to receive equal treatment.

I reiterate that there are many fine Muslims and I am not anti-Muslim. I do believe that these United States of America were founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs and that was an integral part of its success. America’s decline matches the distance it has moved away from the Church. Just a piece of the puzzle.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

I sometimes think about what it would have been like to live during the days of the founding of this country. To be part of the original 13 colonies would have been an incredible experience. Of course it would have been very difficult. Life expectancy back then was much lower for obvious reasons. It would be interesting to see this country in its relatively untouched form.

I suspect that the situation in Syria with the United States supporting the government opposition and Putin supporting the official government cannot end well. Putin has sent in troops to support Assad. What will happen if US trained troops kill Russian troops? What if Russian troops kill US troops due to some unfortunate incident. This is a real concern that seems not to be getting the media attention it deserves.

It absolutely deserves to be mention on a preparedness website. The risk of nuclear war I think is somewhat related.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

I have been a fan of the Kindle-line of book readers and multimedia devices for quite some time. Amazon has just revamped their lineup and they just keep getting better and better. Many that are not up on the newest technology find the Kindles are a great way to get a first taste.

Incredibly the new entry level Kindle Fire is now only $49.99. Great way to build a digital preparedness library.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

How many fire extinguishers do you have in your home? I have currently 5 spread throughout. It may not be economic collapse or an alien invasion that creates a SHTF – it may be a kitchen fire.

So – are you prepared?

Preseason Preparation: 4 Tips for Better Hunting

By C.

The success rate for hunters continues to rise from the old days when a harvested buck in a small town made local headlines. A 2013 survey by the Quality Deer Management Association found that Virginia had the highest ratio, 80 percent, of harvested deer to tags sold by the state’s Fish and Game Department.

Hunters in the Southeast as a whole enjoyed a 58 percent harvest rate for deer. But those in the Midwest were only successful 42 percent of the time, while the Idaho Fish And Game Department reported a 20 percent success rate for elk hunters in 2012. These regions simply do not produce deer like southeastern habitats, which lowers the chance of a successful hunt.

whitetail-deer-hunting-montague-county-01

Whether your game of choice is whitetail deer, waterfowl or turkeys, the success rate of your hunting excursions will depend largely on how you prepare in the offseason. These four tips will assist hunters of all experience levels.

General Maintenance

The last thing you want to happen on your first hunt of the season is a ready, aim, “click” scenario. General firearms maintenance should be done every offseason to prevent residue build up and potential mechanical malfunctions.

Handguns should be field stripped before using a bore brush and solvent to clean the barrel. Use a nylon brush and solvent to clean the outside casing. Every gun has specific lubrication points which the owner’s manual should cover. Make certain you use only a drop or two of oil, as too much will attract fouling and quickly defeat the purpose of your cleaning job. Rifle cleaning is similar, but you’ll need a vice or some sort of makeshift mechanism to hold it in place while cleaning.

Hunting calls should be removed from their lanyards. Acrylic calls should be taken apart, cleaned with soapy water (no alcohol as it can damage the material), and completely dried before storing. The inserts and barrels should be separated on wooden calls. They should also be stored in a cool, dry place as sunlight can change the color of the wood, while water can cause shrinkage and cracks in the barrel.

Scouting

Technology has made this aspect of offseason preparation easier and more fun. Aaron Milliken, of Whitetail Properties, told Outdoor Life magazine he uses Google Earth to digitally scout a property from above. Search for an area with little human access and a lot of natural food sources for deer. Look for areas with water sources and grassy fields that naturally attract deer. You can also anticipate wind patterns based on how water moves over the land.

Once you’ve drawn a map based on your virtual scouting, take a trip to your spot to scout on foot. Late March and early April are the perfect times to observe deer tracks left behind in the snow or on muddy grounds. Look for deer rubs on trees and consider hanging trail cameras from them for continued surveillance. Note the location of any tree stands already there. These will indicate both deer activity and the potential for unwanted company.

All of these factors taken together will provide a rough map of deer activity in the area.

Tags and Licenses

Federal and state governments are constantly changing the laws as they pertain to hunting. It is your responsibility to stay on top of it all. Visit your local fish and game department in the spring, and pick up any pamphlets and brochures available pertaining to current regulations. Most states require hunters to take an approved hunter education course before issuing a license. Waterfowl hunters will also need a migratory bird stamp from both the federal and state governments in most cases.

Target Practice

Unless you have the natural shooting abilities of the late Tom Knapp, target practice will be essential for every hunter in the offseason. Clay and skeet shooting with friends is the perfect activity for waterfowl hunters. Shoot ranges allow you to place targets at various distances to perfect your kill shot on deer, bears, and other large game. There are archery clubs for bowhunters to hone their skills as well.

Former Indianapolis 500 champion Bobby Unser once said success is where preparation and opportunity meet. Hunters who live by that advice will be the most successful.

A Better Spectrum Analyzer for your Rigol Scope

The Rigol DS1000 series of oscilloscopes are popular with hobbyists for good reason: they provide decent specs at a low price. However, their spectrum analysis abilities are lacking. While these scopes do have a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) function, it’s limited and nearly useless for RF.

A FFT plotted by the PyDSA tool and a Rigol oscilloscope[Rich] wanted a spectrum analyzer for amateur radio purposes, but didn’t want to build his own sampling hardware for it. Instead, he wrote PyDSA, a software spectrum analyzer for Rigol DS1000 oscilloscopes. This tool uses the USB connection on the scope to fetch samples, and does the number crunching on a far more powerful PC. It’s able to plot a 16,000 point FFT at two sweeps per second when run on a decent computer.

PyDSA is a Python script that makes use of the Virtual Instrument Software Architecture (VISA) interface to control the scope and fetch the sample data. Fortunately there’s some Python libraries that take care of the protocol.

[Rich] is now able to use his scope to measure amateur radio signals, which makes a nice companion to his existing Teensy based SDR project. If you have a Rigol, you can grab the source on Github and try it out.

From the Desk of John Rourke – September 22nd, 2015

The mainstream media is having a field day with what Ben Carson recently said about not supporting a Muslim to run for President. I would have to say at least 90% of America would agree with him. I would not vote for a Muslim either. Does that make me prejudice? Call it what you wish. Although many Muslims are loyal to non-Muslim governments that is NOT what the Quran  teaches.

The ridiculous thing is this is a needless question that has no basis or merit to even be asked. Just a pundit trying to get a news story for the masses. Real reporting? Not even close.

How to Can Bacon

by sevantheart

You will need:   a large (tall) pressure canner; a rack on feet OR 2 racks and jelly jars with caps and rings;  quart jars with caps and rings, preferably wide-mouth, thick-sliced bacon,  and parchment paper (or paper bags).

Get lots of parchment paper; I buy mine in rolls at Sam’s – much cheaper this way.

Get your jars ready –  quarts will work best for this project, and wide-mouth will be easier to fill than regular mouth jars.

4d77b26f4d04bd52b0a0fc2bab22ee6bRemember that canning bacon works best with thick-sliced; most other will disintegrate or turn into a large blob of bacon.

Cook your bacon in advance (trust me when I say this works better than packing raw bacon, although, you CAN do that, too!). I microwave ours; but, cook it until it’s “crispy” (or, however you like it cooked). You will have to cook it up again to crisp it again when you open the jars, but, that won’t take much “cooking” when you pack it cooked.

Tear off a strip of parchment paper to hold about 8 slices, rolled up; if you get it too short, it doesn’t matter; you’ll just pull off another piece of parchment and keep going. Parchment paper cans just fine; don’t use wax paper – it does not. You CAN use paper bags, if necessary, but, parchment paper works best.

Roll your bacon, one cooked strip at a time, in parchment, making sure each strip is rolled and protected from the next strip by paper; if the bacon is wrapped meat-to-meat; it will all stick together after processing and cooling, and you will have one big lump of bacon. Good luck getting that out of the jar!

When you have about 8 strips (you may be able to get more in there!); fold the strips of wrapped bacon in “half”; trim the ends of the parchment, leaving about one (1) inch at either end of the bacon (one inch parchment paper hangover on each end).

GENTLY stuff the folded strips down inside your jars. This is where you will understand why I tell you wide-mouth is best here. You CAN use regular mouth, but, GENTLY work it down, using a spatula, or some such tool. And try not to mutter to yourself too much while stuffing regular mouth jars!

When the jar is filled (it’s o.k. if it’s not “full-full”, as in there are air spaces – that’s normal for this project), wipe jar openings with hot water. Each jar opening needs to be wiped down with VERY hot water and a fresh paper towel; fat is very easy to transfer. Wear protective insulated rubber gloves for handling the hot paper towels, but use one fresh paper towel per jar.

Sterilize your caps and place them; sterilize your rings and place them.

Now, you can process these down in the water, and the result will be “o.k.”. What I find works much better is to DRY CAN THE BACON. This is not running your canner dry – that will ruin your canner; what it means is the jars need to be held ABOVE the water line while processing. (BTW: you can use this method to sterilize tools and instruments, but, that’s another story for another day).

This is where the height of your canner is important, and thus, a bigger canner works better for this project  – make sure you have three (3) inches of clearance between the top of your bacon jars and the top of your canner, when it is sealed. So, when you put in all your racks and your jelly jars of water, or whatever, then your next rack and the jars of bacon, you need 3 inches of clearance at the top.

Make sure you have about three (3) inches of water in your canner; you don’t want to run out of water.

Use a rack with legs that hold the jars above the water line (good luck finding THAT!), or – do this:

1.  Place one rack in the bottom of the canner, as you always do.

2.  Fill at least four (4) jelly jars with water and add lids and rings; you can either process good, clean water (not municipal, fluoride, nano-particle drug water!) and store it as sterile water (an excellent prep item – use for cleaning out wounds, etc.), or, just sacrifice a few caps for the sake of the project without saving the water – you can use the same jelly jars of water as many times as you need. Let them cool a little between loads. You’re going to use the jelly jars to build up the height for processing bacon; YOU CAN NOT DO THIS WITH EMPTY JARS – THEY WILL ‘FLOAT”, AND CRACK DURING PROCESSING. You can not process other food in the jelly jars at the same time, as jelly jars are much smaller than quarts; food processed in a jelly jar for that length of time will turn to mush.

3.  Place jelly jars of water atop first rack that is protecting them from bottom of canner.

4.  Place a second rack on top of jelly jars – this rack can literally lay across them
5. Set your quarts of bacon atop this SECOND rack. Check your water in canner – you need three (3) inches of water; if water laps bottom of jars, o.k., but you don’t want them immersed in water.

6.  Seal your canner and fire her up!

7. On high heat, build your steam; steam it out for 10 minutes, as always (10 minute tornado from the vent pipe);

8.  Place your counterweight on the vent pipe; bring to 10 lbs. pressure and process @ 10 lbs. for 90 minutes because we’re doing quarts. After 90 minutes at 10 lbs. pressure, turn off heat if gas, remove from heat if electric.

9.  Allow to cool naturally; remove jars; if wide-mouth, remember, they don’t make the noise regular mouth make when sealing, and they don’t make the same sound when tapped. NEVER TAP THE CENTER OF THE CAP TO TEST – TAP AROUND THE EDGES.

10.  When thoroughly cooled, wash your jars of bacon in hot, soapy water (fat everywhere!), rinse in hot water, allow jars to thoroughly dry; mark caps with contents and date and store away.

To enjoy: it’s already cooked; you could just set it out in the sun and heat it up, or, eat it straight from the jar. But, Yes! It will be greasy (the paper does absorb a lot of the grease). I like to throw it in a pre-heated cast iron skillet and just “re-crisp” it. It doesn’t take long at all!

This works out great for camping (even though it is in glass). That glass jar comes in handy for storing other leftovers, as well, so, you’ll get more than one use from the jar while traveling.

It’s also convenient to have pre-cooked bacon at the ready for a quick breakfast, casserole, etc.

How long is this good? 5-6 years, if you store it out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources.

And now you know: how to dry can bacon! If you don’t want to dry can, just use the standard method of one rack sitting in the water; all other instructions do not change.
