Rourke’s Weekly Recommendations

Every week I throw out a few recommendations on things such as movies, books, knives, flashlights – all kinds of stuff. Some of these are not related to preparedness whatsoever – rather, just stuff I like. Most are available on Amazon but not all. I have a particular fondness for movies as one of my favorite things to do is to sit back and watch a good one.

So – for this week……here is my list:

Books (non-fiction)

101 Things to Do With a Dutch Oven

A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs

Green Eyes and Black Rifles

Books (fiction)

Without Fail – a Jack Reacher novel

13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi

Movies/TV

The Final Countdown  – one of my favorites!

Groundhog Day

Tom Selleck: Stone Cold

Christmas Story

From the Desk of John Rourke – December 1st, 2015

Drone technology is getting better and better. I have recently ordered my first drone that has real-time inflight camera viewing. The applications for large area viewing are obvious although it being seen or heard and attracting unwanted attention is certainly a possibility. This is a first step. We’ll see how it goes.

There is a lot of chatter around Internet forums and groups asking the question – “With the threat of ISIS as well as the refugees coming into the United States what are you doing differently from day to day?”

The typical answers are carrying concealed more often and just paying more attention to the surrounding environment.  Myself? Nothing. I am not doing anything different.

While world “leaders” in Paris dined on gourmet dishes and drank the finest wine their citizens in many cases are concerned about putting food on the table and worried that ISIS is infiltrating their countries.  As fine wine swirls in their glasses each of their countries continue to run massive deficits putting their citizens in tremendous debt. While morale decay engulfs the world these representatives celebrate their own existence while creating a future which will have no ill effect on themselves – only their people.  Looking at the world economy as a whole and the many threats that exist it is incredible that global climate is being deemed the biggest threat to all.

These leaders are nothing more than puppets being controlled by puppet masters who seek only to line their own pockets off the work and suffering of others.

Shameful.

Call to Action: December 15′ – Shelter

act-nowThis is the second installment of a new monthly series called “Call to Action”. Call to Action (CTA) is a monthly reminder to review one part of your prep’s and strengthen it.

This month is looking at what I consider an often overlooked prep…..shelter.

Full disclosure here….this is one of the preparations that I lack most. Like many others – I have a roof over my head and forget just how delicate a house can be. Whether it be fire, a hurricane or tornado, or a sudden need to evacuate – I may lose that roof and the protection it provides.

Alternative shelters range in simplicity, effectiveness, and cost. The important thing to do this month is review your Plan B and Plan C shelter methods and make sure they are intact (maybe a Plan D as well).

My first primitive shelter 75% compete....

My first primitive shelter 75% complete….

Primitive Shelter – I have no intention of surviving the rest of my days living in a “lean-to” or a “mud hut” – but they serve a purpose. Primitive shelters are just that – primitive, and in my opinion are a last resort and for short-term stays only. Limited protection against the cold, the heat, wind, rain, and predators….both four legged and two – do not make these a very good option.

Tents – No doubt tents are one of the most popular and plentiful alternative shelter methods out there. A large, family sized tent can be had for around $100 and will assist in providing shelter from the elements. Tents can be used for several days or several weeks. Many of the cheaper tents lack the durability for long-term use however they are cheap enough that a couple can be bought and put back.

tent

Family-sized tent…..

Tarps – Tarps are extraordinarily useful and very inexpensive. Available in many sizes – tarps can be used to make expedient shelters as well as help patch leaking roofs. Tarps can also be used in conjunction with tents to increase the ability for the tent to fend off rain and wind. Tarps can be purchased at Wally-World, Northern Tools and most any home improvement store.

tarp_1

Not exactly a tarp but very similar are drop cloth’s used by painters. These are thin plastic sheets that can often do many of the same things a regular tarp can do in a much more portable package. Being thinner they are certainly less durable and can be bought different sizes and thicknesses.

Campers – Whether it be a full-sized RV that you can drive around or a small pop up camper – these things can be home away from home in an emergency. Obviously not a cheap option – many people have these for recreational purposes and can benefit from them if the need to evacuate occurs or the main home is uninhabitable.

My buddy John Taylor gives us a tour of his pop up below…..

Campground – Campgrounds are a location which a tent can be thrown up or a trailer parked pretty inexpensively. They are a possible choice to relocate to. One problem is many people may think the same thing and the camps could get over crowded. Regardless – if you are burned out of your home or evacuation is necessary for some other reason – a campground is a possible back up plan.

Hotels – Very similar to campgrounds – hotels are a popular option for those traveling and forced to relocate. Hotels are typically very expensive and also do not take kindly to pets that may also be traveling.

Family – Likely one of the most obvious possible alternative shelter plans are staying with friends and family. Depending upon the situation some challenges could be presented especially if you are armed and the home owners are not gun-friendly.

Empty/Abandoned Homes – I consider this a last resort and only for a serious life-threatening situation. Imagine the predicament one would find themselves should the “empty” home end up being occupied by armed inhabitants. Not good. This option really needs pre-planning for the best possible outcome.

So – for this month consider what your plans are if for some reason you are forced out of your home or apartment. Where can you go? Where will you stay? For how long? What will you bring with you? What supplies will already be there? What security considerations will need to be taken?

If you already have plans – care to share?

Take care all –

Rourke

Lucid Dreaming | December Bootcamp

December Bootcamp

In preparation for my big resolucid next year, and since school is finally finished and I have all the time in the world, I have decided to make December a bootcamp month for myself. I'll be working hard on the fundamentals, memory, intent and awareness so that I can hit the ground running next year. Consistency of input is the big thing I need to improve on in order to get consistent outputs.

My goals for December:

-Write in my dream journal every night, no matter how much or how little I remember. (On a side night this will give me motivation to complete my dream journal formatting program I've been working on in python :).
-Meditate every day. I have gotten lax about it and I don't know why lol, it has been so beneficial. Sensory awareness meditation will help with my dream body awareness and breaths meditation should help with regular awareness and calmness.
-Post on Dreamviews every day. Not that related to lucid dreaming practice but will greatly help motivation and becoming more active is never a bad thing, right.
-Let go of the pressure associated with lucid dreaming. This is a tricky one as I generally either place too much emphasis on becoming lucid as a success, which leads to frustration and stress when it doesn't go according to plan, or place too little emphasis on it and become apathetic towards practice. Any advice here would be much appreciated :).
-Update my dreamsigns and reality checks. I am sure since I first tried to list my dreamsigns over a year ago some of them will have changed, and sorting that out will help me refine my practice.

So I think that's it. If anyone has any suggestions for anything else I could be doing feel free to say so. I am going away for the next few days so I probably wont be on Dreamviews then, but I'll be sure to post everything from there when I get back. Besides, it'll give me an opportunity to further test my theory that sleeping in a different location/while on holiday greatly boosts dream recall.

I'll keep progress of any major developments/accomplishments here. Righty-o, off we go!

Lucid Dreaming | Pretending to be LDing

Some folks, me included, like to imagine they are becoming lucid during the day. It is a good exercise( Sometimes i feel like i know in my gut that i will become lucid for having done this exercise*)

But of course one knows to be awake, not dreaming.
The fun is to challenge that certainty, and keep telling yourself that you are dreaming. And almost make yourself confused.
Just dont overdo it !

From the Desk of John Rourke – November 30th, 2015

I sincerely hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!! Mine went very well. As usual I ate too much and the tryptophan in the turkey knocked me out.

Reader C.D. sent this in – CMP WIll Get 100,000 1911 Pistols

I have not had cable or satellite for a couple of years. This affords me an opportunity to “tune out” of current events at times. Over the Thanksgiving holiday I watched no news and stayed away from Drudge Report or any other news site. This provided some very stress free and welcome days. Think we all need that once in awhile.

I found that the trigger was adjustable on my Winchester Model 70. What a difference!! It was extremely heavy and by making this adjustment the accuracy should improve dramatically.

Pet Preparedness – something I hardly ever see anything about. I have started stocking up on dry food for my dogs. Both husky’s eat Rachael Ray ZERO Grain dog food. They are packed in thick plastic bags with a expiration date close to a year away.

Body Armor Test – Part 1

Every time I get around other like-minded folks the topic of firearms always comes up. What do you have? What do you recommend? What is the minimum number of magazines to have? What do you consider to be a good minimum amount of ammo to put back? Ak or AR? 9mm or 40S&W or 45ACP? It goes on and on. You know a question I have never been asked?

“Hey, what kind of armor do you have?”

Nope – never been asked. The reality is preppers spend a ton of money on guns and ammo preparing for possible defensive situations and most preppers don’t consider body armor. Maybe the reason is all the time spent at the range shooting and hitting targets that don’t shoot back. Maybe it’s denial. Maybe spending a few hundred dollars on a hunk of metal or ceramic just isn’t as “cool” as a new gun. The reality is if a firefight happens and triggers are getting pulled rounds will go in both directions. Body armor just might save a life.

I have been slowly accumulating body armor vests and plates over the past few years. A couple months ago I contacted ModernSurvivalOnline sponsor SafeGuardArmor.com to get me a steel plate. Although not something they normally carry they we able to source a plate for me.

Levels of Protection

To summarize there are different levels of protection provided by body armor. These are generally categorized by a specific “Level”.  The chart below shows the different levels of protection and corresponding ammunition that specific level protects against. The higher the level the higher the level of protection.

The plate provided by Safeguard Armor is rated Level III.

NIJ Ballistic Chart

How Plates Are Carried

Plates are carried in plate carriers. These are vests provide a “pocket” on the front/back, and sometimes on the sides which plates are placed in. The plates ride in the carrier and cover vital areas.

Testing and Protection Demonstration

This initial testing included shooting a variety of calibers I had on hand. Part 2 will include additional calibers which should fit within the plates Level III rating.

plate1 (1)

Level III plate ready for punishment.

plate2 (1)

A couple shots of 115-gr FMJ 9mm had very little effect on the plate other than paint removal.

plate3 (1)

Standard 55-gr .223 Remington  – nothing more than paint removal.

plate4 (1)

This photo shows both the 9mm and .223 Remington hits.

20151114_164810 (1)

The Winchester BRI Sabot Slug fires a .50 caliber hour-glass 437 grain slug at around 1375 fps. Say you want a .50 caliber? Throw a Sabot Slug in your 12 gauge and you have one.

plate5 (1)

The 12 gauge Sabot Slug hits with tremendous power – but still no damage to the plate.

plate6 (1)

Here is a close up of the Winchester BRI 12 gauge sabot slug’s impact.

plate7 (1)

After this initial testing the back of the plate shows no deformity or damage at all.

In a few weeks I will be back out on the range punishing this plate with some additional calibers – including those that should push its limit.

I want to give a “shout out” to Safeguard Armor for sourcing this plate. If you are interested in body armor they carry a huge variety and are one of the industry leaders. As a sponsor of this website they help support me so I can keep being here for you.

Stay tuned for Part 2.

Lucid Dreaming | Main technique for LDs

Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to LDing, having heard of it a couple of months ago. I began DJing, and ADA during the day, plus SSILD once or twice every night. With this, I had a LD every 10 days on average.
While this is nice, I was wondering if the frequency of my LDs would increase over time, and if it would be dependent on the ADA (more ADA practice = more LDs with SSILD).
So should I keep on doing SSILD with ADA, or switch to MILD with RCs throughout the day to improve my prospective memory? I know that MILD success improves with practice, but can the same be said regarding SSILD?
Thanks.

Lucid Dreaming | Loads of OBE's :-) loads of problems :-(

Hi everyone, so I have been trying to master CANwild (DEILD using an alarm) and i am having incremental success. This month i have on 6 occasions woken during a dream with my alarm and been able to 'dive' into powerful vibrations and separate from my body by simply getting up into my bedroom which is great ... but ... theres always a but.

But each time i find myself standing there in my bedroom i always suspect that im dreaming so i perform a reality check (nose plug) and then try to continue the dream from there. This is my last 5 attempts

1) DEILD > Got up > walked around house doing reality checks but still was not convinced it was a dream even though deep down i knew i must be dreaming. This led into a non lucid dream

2) DEILD > Got up >Nose plugged, couldn't breath but even so i knew something wasnt right so I nose plugged again and still couldn't breath, this then quickly dissolved into a non lucid dream

3) DEILD > Tried getting up but was stuck, was experiencing powerful vibrations and was transitioning but i could only move a little bit however hard i tried. I then switched to imagining myself appearing at the bottom of my bed and this worked but my arms were stuck behind my back and i went into a non lucid dream

So i seem to be able to separate from my body and appear in my room so the first part is getting mastered but then i simply don't have enough awareness to convince myself im in a dream regardless of any reality checks i do

Can anyone help? Once ive conquered this final stage then i will be close to mastering DEILD's

Many thanks guys (and girls)
Ezzo

Transmitting Tee Vee From A Pi

Want to set up your own television station? This hack might help: [Jan Panteltje] has worked out how to turn a Raspberry Pi into a DVB-S transmitter. DVB-S is a TV transmission standard originally created for satellite broadcasts, but Hams also use it to send video on the amateur bands. What [Jan] did was to use software on the Pi to encode the video into the transport stream, which is then fed out to the home-made transmitter that modulates the data into a DVB-S signal. [Jan] has successfully tested the system with a direct connection, feeding the output of the transmitter into a DVB-S decoder card that could read the data and decode the video signal. To create a real broadcast signal, the next step would be to feed the output of the signal into an amplifier and larger transmitter that broadcast the signal.

That’s a big step, though, and I hope that [Jan] holds off and does a bit more documentation first. At the moment, the schematics for this are all hand-drawn, and the prototype is a wire-wrapped bit of protoboard. This is a very impressive hack, though: there are amateur DVB-S transmitters available, but most put the encoding onto a dedicated chip. We’ve seen hacks using the simpler DVB-T standard and a Pi before, but getting a Pi to do some of the heavy lifting makes it cheaper and more flexible, so kudos to [Jan] and colleagues for their work.

Lucid Dreaming | First Lucid?

after a long time of practicing i think i may have got my first lucid. it wasn't very good, not at all but i believe i was lucid. i realised that something was definitely weird and did nose plug rc. it worked and i got the exploding head. i tried to move around and stabilise the dream but it felt like my eyes were closed and i couldn't do anything. i walked around a bit then i just woke up. i think it lasted for about 30secs, but i will count it anyway. how could i make myself actually be able to see because from what i remember when i was trying to feel my surroundings i had no clue where i was going.

Lucid Dreaming | Many "Lucid False Awakenings" all of a sudden

Hi, a couple days ago I experienced a False Awakening that immediately turned into a lucid dream, which False Awakenings usually do for me.
Also, this last night I experienced not one, but TWO False Awakenings - in the first one my legs were itching a lot, which woke me up pretty quickly (I couldn't scratch away the itch during the dream, and it turned out that my legs were itching when I had woken up as well), and then I fell asleep again and had a much longer False Awakening, which I spent mostly on talking to some got girl and kissing her when I felt like it. :cheeky:

Anyway, do you have any idea why these False Awakenings start happening now all of a sudden?
I have had a long dryspell lately, but now I suddenly get False Awakenings a lot.

Storing Thanksgiving Dinner

by Lee Flynn

Thanksgiving leftovers can be a pain in the butt to store. If they don’t get eaten fast enough, they can spoil. If you’d rather have them as food storage, however, it can be even more difficult to store what you’ve already cooked or what you didn’t even open. Do not worry. There are ways to accomplish what you want to without going to incredible expenses.

One of the easiest ways to make the Thanksgiving leftovers food storage is to make sure you freeze it. This can be done by putting it in airtight containers or in freezer bags. To prepare before Thanksgiving, go through your freezer and find what you won’t eat or what is freezer burnt. Throw them out or give them away since freezing food often saves it past the expiration date. However, be aware that freezing the food won’t make it long-term food storage – unless you didn’t cook the turkey since meat is one of the best things to keep in the freezer for this kind of storage.

If you have dried or instant foods that you did not use that don’t expire for a few years, you can use a fleece fabric and your storage area. A root cellar or a specified place would be the best place to put this. Use the fabric to create a blanket and either cover the food or use it to cover the floor of the cellar or pantry. This will show that you have designated it for food storage for the long term.

Another tip is to simply buy extra and designate the extra to go to food storage. This allows you to put the extra in your food storage without having to worry about making sure that you have enough for the holidays. Dried cranberries, instant mashed potatoes, and an extra turkey if you like can all be put into your food storage without compromising your Thanksgiving dishes. You will also save freezer space and your freezer containers. It also allows you to have access to Thanksgiving food without worrying about if they have been freezer burnt.

If you run short on time and cannot use something, store it properly. Potatoes, for instance, can last a while in the pantry before they begin to grow eyes. Clean, cook, and mash them before freezing them to allow you access to real mashed potatoes that will simply need to be defrosted – if you have a camping stove, you can warm them up when you need to.

If you want to store potatoes, consider using a long container and sawdust. Simply put a layer of sawdust on the bottom of the container. Then put a layer of potatoes in. Make sure you do not wash them. Continue this until the container is full. However, you can also use a large trash bag. Be weary of doing so. The trash bag is more difficult to use when you get to the bottom layers come spring or when you get there. The reason the sawdust works incredibly well is because it insulates the potatoes. The container or trash bag keeps the light out, which keeps the potatoes from going green while they’re in storage. Whatever you do, do not put your unused potatoes in the fridge. This will turn the starches into sugar faster and give you an odd tasting potato. Storing them in a paper bag in a cool place if you plan on using them in the near future is a better idea.

Food storage is important, so it’s important to know the limitations of your space, your house, and the different methods you will be using. Using them all to your advantage, you can keep your food fresh, stored properly, or ready to use in an emergency. Having the proper items on hand to make sure they are cooked right is also important, but that can be addressed after the holidays.

Gathering Information: Simple method for downloading YouTube Video’s

As I build my preparedness library I am finding video’s are becoming a larger part than I originally intended. If a picture is worth a thousand words…well….a video is worth even more.  I am using multiple tablets and Kindle Fire’s to store my electronic library including the video’s.

You name it it can be found on video. This includes movies for entertainment, how to dress a deer, how to take care of a broken arm, instructions on building fences, etc.

The biggest challenge to putting together this video library is actually downloading the video’s so they can be viewed offline. Well – there is actually a very simple method.

Here it is:

Step #1 – Find the video you wish to download.

Step #2 – Find the url for the video at the top of the screen – see below. It starts with http://www.youtube .

maxresdefault (2)

Step #3 – add a ss between www. and the youtube – then click enter

ss_en_1

Step #4 – at this point another website opens. Now click the green “Download” button and the video will download automatically.

Notice the box next to the green Download button. You can change the video format if you wish.

2

That’s it!! Super simple and it works great.

Take care – Rourke

Lucid Dreaming | Prospective Memory strengthening techniques?

Just wanted to hear if anyone has some different ways of strengthening prospective memory or have had success noticing their prospective memory getting stronger? I feel like I’m not getting anywhere and that my inability to remember to do something when I want to remember to do it seems to be holding me back. I have quite okay dream recall, I practice awareness techniques and I am doing reality checks throughout the day at both random intervals and when I reminded with the use of Lucille on my computer but I do not think this helps with my prospective memory.

I have read the way to strengthen prospective memory is this – choose something like “every time I see an animal” or “every-time I turn on a light switch” or “the next time I get in my car” at the start of the day create a strong intention to do a reality check at each of those moments. After doing a few days with the same one choose something different. And then add on so you are doing 2-3 different ones each day.
My frustration is that I have been practicing for months now and what always seems to happen is that I either completely forget to do the RC or, quite often, I remember about 5 min after seeing the thing that was supposed to trigger me, so I have a delayed response.

Do other types of memory practices help or is there any other way to go about this? Is this a successful method for most people to strengthen their prospective memory and get up to having multiple triggers per day and remembering to do a RC (do I just have something wrong with my brain?)

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope everyone has a great day today. Growing up Thanksgiving was always a special time with families getting together and just having a good time. Roaring fires in fireplaces, watching football and even a couple times getting up early to go hunting made these days special and created so many memories.

I sincerely hope each and every one of you have a fantastic day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Rourke

Lucid Dreaming | Reality Check

Hello! this is a quick little idea that I have always gone by and just recently realized that I should share it with you. I was talking with someone and I realized that all of his RCs were to prove that he was indeed awake and all of my RCs prove that I am asleep. We brush this away usually by saying if a RC succeeds, does that mean that you are awake or asleep?

In order to talk about this a little more I must put a couple of quotes here that we shall look at together
Quote:

"You can do anything in a dream"
Many people
Quote:

“But I cannot forget that, at other times I have been deceived in sleep by similar illusions; and, attentively considering those cases, I perceive so clearly that there exist no certain marks by which the state of waking can ever be distinguished from sleep, that I feel greatly astonished; and in amazement I almost persuade myself that I am now dreaming.”
Renee Descartes

So this is what I have been looking at lately:
Quote:

I perceive so clearly that there exist no certain marks by which the state of waking can ever be distinguished from sleep.
I come up with my own ideas from this. I can never know 100% that I am awake, because I could have a dream that was exactly like this. Even if I do a RC, then in a dream (in which anything can happen) that RC could behave just like it would in waking, "proving" that I am awake. But it doesn't prove anything. I know that RCs are mainly to raise awareness, but what awareness are we raising if we don't understand the principal of the reality check.

I usually categorize LDers by one thing That One Lucid Dream. If you have been LDing for a while, you understand what I am talking about. That lucid dream the one above all others. The one that you were convinced that you were awake, because of the amount of realness and vividness and sense that everything around you made, but when you did a RC, you realized that you were in a dream. If you have had that LD, it changes how you think about life, if you have not, then you are in for an amazing awakening soon (do you see the pun?)

So if we cannot know 100% that we are awake, can we know 100% that we are asleep? If I am flying around, I can assume that gravity is not working and I am asleep. If things are not persistent, I can assume that I am asleep, as I know that I the waking world is persistent. But just because something is persistent, that doesn't make it waking.

I guess what I am saying is that only in a dream can we know, almost for a fact, what state we are in.

When approaching RCs, I recommend doing the thing that will prove it is a dream, not prove that you are awake.

I hear people saying things like "I know that I am awake because I can remember what I did the last few hours". Which is funny to me, because in a dream I usually remember exactly what I have been doing for years and months and weeks and days and hours, but it is in waking that I usually forget what I have been doing. I have a mission in dreams, waking is much more weird and less goal and time oriented.

So what I usually recommend for an RC is the idea of trying to prove that it is a dream. Do something that rarely fails in a dream, something that you have mastered. I have a couple of ideas here for me that usually help me tell the difference.
Telekinesis(or any dream control)
I actually try to do this all the time throughout my days, accidentally even. When I am reaching for something or entering a room, I try to lift it to my hand without even thinking that that would be a weird thing to do. I often enter a room in a dream, reach for something and telekinesis it to me and realize I am dreaming at that moment.

Dream Feeling
Most of us have a "dream feeling" that we feel in dreams, something that is almost impossible to explain with words, but is present in dreams. Often if I have a bit of awareness in a dream, I will notice that feeling and stop and realize that it is a dream. It is a feeling that I cannot feel in waking, so it proves that it is a dream.

Doubt
You know what never happens to me in waking? I never doubt that I am awake. Any time I doubt that I am awake, I always assume that this is a dream. It has never failed me, but I still am cautious after and do a dream control RC before attempting anything crazy.

Sleep
This is what has been my new dream goal lately, one of the reasons is that it proves that I am in a dream 100%. As soon as I realize it is a dream, instead of going straight to my goals, I just lay down and go to sleep, use this as a teleportation technique and a 100% RC, because I remember falling asleep 2 seconds ago. Worst case scenario, people think I am weird because I jump on their couch and pretend to sleep.

There are lots of other things like this, but this is what I will cover for now. If you wanted to put it a different way (rather than being in doubt all the time by thinking that you cannot prove that it is waking and thinking you might go crazy), you can say If I cannot prove that it is a dream, then I must be awake.

This has made me realize that I needed to change my mantra (As well as FM helping too!) over to "remember, I'm dreaming", because I never have trouble thinking I am awake, it seems to be default. I like to go through the idea that I should change my mindset to always thinking I am sleeping (unless that 99% rule I mentioned where you are pretty sure you are awake). You may ask "but what if I start thinking that it is a dream during the day?" Then go through a lot of things when you wake up! Because dreams don't always start the same, but waking does, hence the name. ;)

This has made me form my own quote for this whole thing:
Quote:

I don't RC because I may be sleeping, I RC because I may be awake.

Let me know what you think! Anything to add or take away or if this helps in any way! :)

APRS Repeaters Get the Signal Out of Mammoth Cave

APRS Cave-Link uses the amateur radio’s Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) inside caves to get their position data (and other messages) out.

Imagine that you’re coordinating a large scale search-and-rescue mission in a cave. You need to know where all your groups are, and whether or not they’ve found anything. But how do they all communicate to the command center?

You’d guess radio, but you’d guess wrong. Radio doesn’t propagate well at all in a maze of twisty passages, all alike; rocks absorb radio waves, especially in the VHF/UHF range that’s best suited for most small radios. In the past, you’d run wire and transmit along it. This article runs through the options in detail. But adding miles of wire to your already heavy caving and climbing gear is a nuisance or worse.

UHFx_banner

Some experiments by groups of amateur radio operators, and cavers, with APRS repeaters aim to change that. Digipeaters, as they’re known in the APRS world, take an incoming message and forward it on again. On each successive hop, the station that received the signal appends its name to a list of paths that are sent along with the message, which assures that the message propagates but doesn’t get repeated around forever in a loop.

Digipeaters and battery packs are dropped, in Hänsel and Gretel fashion, as the cavers work their way through the cave. The trick is to make sure to place one repeater before you’ve entirely lost the radio signal from the previous one, of course. But the APRS Cave-Link project got one mile’s worth of transmission in Mammoth Cave without using wires at all. That’s not bad!

waveguide_tnNow, GPS still doesn’t work underground, so the cavers need to bring an accurate map along with them and keep track of their own location. But even getting important messages (“we found him!”) passed around inside a cave environment is enough of a challenge.

We’ve seen APRS used for tracking high-altitude balloon payloads, and we can’t help but wonder if the same attention to weight-saving that’s demonstrated in these DIY versions wouldn’t also be useful in a caving context.

Have you made any cool networks of APRS links? Under adverse conditions? Let us know in the comments.

And thanks [Travis Goodspeed] for the unintentional tip.

From the Desk of John Rourke – November 25th, 2015

A lot of special sales going on right now. Some of them offer a great way to save not only on electronics, clothes, etc. but also on preparedness-related products. I just received an email that Earth Easy has their LifeStraw line of products on sale for 2 days only 25% off. Use promo code “READY25” and get a LifeStraw for only $14.96.

Another day another series of disturbing things being reported in the headlines. The shooting in Chicago will no doubt hurt race relations as the media celebrate having something which raises ratings. Nevermind the countless others that are shot and killed every week in that city. Nope – no protests and no outrage as criminals commit crimes. The officer in this shooting will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Somehow the protestors and other “victims” of this crime will demand more – whatever that is.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Things continue to heat up in Syria. ISIS keeps murdering and now Turkey has shot down both a jet and a rescue helicopter. I can’t help but think that right now those responsible are thinking to themselves…..”What the hell did we just do?”

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

As I type this the Baofeng UV-5R handheld Ham radio’s are running just over $25.00 on Amazon. What a great deal.

My Winchester Model 70 .270 shot well but seriously needs a trigger job. I swear it must be pulling at 6 pounds. Love the scope.

Here is a thought – if those in favor of gun control had their way this is what you would be left with to protect yourself:

Lucid Dreaming | Im Buzzing but lost in space

Hi, so i have been practising DIELD lately and the following is happening. I wake during the dream with my alarm (no problem there) I then drift back to sleep holding some awareness (no problem there either) then i hit powerful cycles of head buzzing / vibrations lasting about 5 seconds each. After about 3 of these 'waves' of head buzzing vibrations everything goes quiet and Im awake for real (no false awakening)

Now in the past i have had 8 successful WILDs and each time i have the same head buzzing vibrations, once they finish i simply get up and find myself in a obe and go off and do a lucid adventure

But NOW after these vibrations i simply find im awake instead, so my question ..

When these strong sensations begin when DIELDing should i try to 'separate' or create a dream scene as the buzzing is actually occuring? Does anyone else experience this and what do you do to successfully transition?

Thanks guys
Ezzo

Lucid Dreaming | What was this

So I had this Lucid dream after a regular dream and I didnt do an RC I just kinda realized I was dreaming. Somehow I ended up at my school and I didnt understand that my friends were just dcs. I told them they were dreaming and they became Lucid. We starting summoning guns and stuff because you know were at school. Then we went to the music room to tell her were dreaming but she didnt think we were. The atmosphere changed and I was in a game but still Lucid. The only thing is I didnt understand I was in a game. I tried waking up so many times and it didnt work so I got scared. Now remember I didnt understand my friends were dcs or that I was in a game but I was concsious pf my actions and able to summon. So was I just dreaming of being lucid or Lucid

From the Desk of John Rourke – November 24th, 2015

Over the past few months it has been a struggle in the gym. A real lack of motivation has been plaguing my efforts. Crossfit has been the mainstay of my fitness system however a few injuries have sidelined that type of workout intensity. Shoulder issues and muscle spasms are not real motivational to go out there and lift stuff up and put it down. I have been a member of the YMCA however my partner changed his work schedule and he could no longer make it at 5:30am for weight lifting.

Feeling the serious need for a change I just joined Gold’s Gym here locally. Place is really nice and they have all the equipment the YMCA didn’t. Feeling like I am back in the late 80’s/early 90’s. I will continue to go to Crossfit mostly for the Olympic lifting and occasional HIIT class. At Gold’s? It’s time to lift stuff up and put stuff down. Heavy stuff that is.

The debate on refugees coming into this country from my perspective is a simple one. There is no way these people can be vetted to ensure our safety, thus, they do not come. Additionally these people – at least the Muslim ones – are not compatible with our culture and our way of life. This can be seen easily by looking at the issues that England, Germany, and France are having as these people WILL NOT assimilate into their hosting countries. I have no issues with the United States assisting with humanitarian aid although there is much that needs to be done at home first(fix the VA).

Regardless – our Administration continues to allow porous borders and exceptions for illegals to stay and now risking catastrophe by importing a problem.

It is not going to turn out well.

Question: Anyone have any experience with the Paratus line of gear – backpacks, pouches, etc? I am looking at the Paratus 3 Day Operator’s Pack. Has great reviews on Amazon and looks to be what I am looking for. At around $80 not a bad price either.

Scenario: Do you leave your kids to look for your spouse?

Scenario’s are valuable tools to get you thinking about possibilities and corresponding decisions/actions BEFORE being confronted with an actual situation. By reviewing and processing a scenario over and over again in your head the ability to process a real event becomes much less stressful. Less stress = a better chance of making the right decisions.

For this scenario:

An EMP hits, you work with some local neighbors to lookout for each other but you really don’t know them well. Your spouse was at work when the EMP hit and they work 10-12 miles away. You have 3 small children. It has been 2 days and your spouse has still not come home. Do you leave your children with your neighbors to look for your spouse? Do you stay with your children and hope and wait your spouse shows up? Or do you take your children with you and go look for your spouse?

What would you do?

The First Radio Sets: a Spark Gap and a Coherer

[Ashish] let us know about his experiments in recreating the earliest type of radio set: a spark-gap transmitter and iron-filings coherer. He goes through the historical development of the kit in great detail, so we’re just going to skip that part. Go read it yourself!

Instead, we’re going to tease you with the coolest part of the rig: the coherer. In [Ashish]’s build, it’s a piece of tubing with some iron filings between two bolts. When a sufficiently strong EM wave hits the filings, they stick together and bridge the gap between the bolts, allowing electricity to flow and light up an LED, for instance. You can see this in [Ashish]’s video below the break, along with kmore discussion of that coherer.

A coherer is a one-shot receiver — the filings have to be physically separated after each reception. Repeatedly tapping on the coherer by hand must have gotten old pretty quickly: period coherers included a “decoherer” — an electromechanical tapper that reset the coherer multiple times per second by hitting it, and contribute to a low buzzing sound when receiving with one.

Human ingenuity being what it is, there were many advances in coherer design over a few decades before crystals made them entirely obsolete. We love peering into these technological cul de sacs and finding that they were full of cleverness. We hope [Ashish] keeps playing around with coherers.

Most of us at Hackaday are licensed amateur radio operators, and we should definitely note that a spark-gap is a ridiculously broadband emitter, and you’re probably transmitting on all sorts of frequencies for which you don’t have a license. The fact that [Ashish]’s signal is strong enough to move iron filings across the room suggests that he might also be interfering with other people’s radio in the neighborhood, or further. A quick check with an AM radio, for instance, would be indicative.

It does look like it’s possible to get permission to run an experimental spark gap transmitter in the form of a Special Temporary Authority from the FCC, though, so all is not lost. If anyone else knows something about legally operating a spark-gap transmitter, please post up in the comments. The retro tech is cool enough that you know people are going to be trying this — let’s see if we can find a way to do so responsibly?

[Ashish] suggested to us that a coherer can probably make a pretty decent lightning detector. We know what our next quickie project is going to be.

Lucid Dreaming | WBTB Help

I've been having a frustration long dry spell since my last LD about 2 months ago.
To try and break it I have been re-visiting WBTB / WILD, but something just seems to not feel right.
I tend to wake naturally at about 4:00 or 4:30, so I go to the toilet, have a drink of water, and then get back to bed to try to WILD.
I lie on my back, and that feels right to try and WILD, but I just can't seem to transition. I get occasional HI, noises, images etc., but just as I think it's going to happen, I snap back to my bed and the moment is gone. I can do this for more than an hour and can't get to sleep or get lucid.
In the end I turn onto my side, but usually then I go to sleep quite quickly even if I try the usual methods to transition.
It's like lying on my back is too uncomfortable to relax into an LD, but lying on my side is too comfortable and I just drop off.

Any suggestions?

Lucid Dreaming | How to not drift off before WILD?

Hey guys,
I've been kinda iffy about lucid dreaming the past four years. I've tried occasionally, and I have had a decent amount. I'm trying to get back in seriously with some WILD, but I haven't found a method yet which helps me not fall back to sleep while attempting it. I've tried doing math in my head as I drift off, tried slowly moving my finger, and nothing seems to work. I end up stopping it and slowly drifting off, unable to continue.

Any method that someone can offer me to help me retain my awareness?

From the Desk of John Rourke – November 20th, 2015

I have been planning on writing about the modern underground economy. Just a few words in the meantime. More and more people are conducting business via barter. Service for material things. Services for services. Material for material. Of course this has been going on for hundreds of years however the modern economy is dictating a higher need and frequency.

Simple online Facebook groups are a major player in the underground economy. People post items of all kinds from kids clothes to firearms all the way up to vehicles. These items are most often sold for cash however barter is frequently used.

I am getting to this post very late as I have been negotiating with several people to trade one of guns for another. There were numerous offers and ideas that were attractive. I ended up trading an AR that costs less than $500 for a Winchester Model 70 bolt action with polymer stock in .270 Winchester. Included the Bushnell scope in 6X18X50.

20151119_220942

I also received 340 rounds of .270 with it.

20151119_221100

This was a great deal! Looking forward to shooting it Saturday.

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

“I don’t know if this needs saying here? It’s likely that at sites like this it’s understood. But just in case it’s not, we are in the beginning stages of WW3. This is not a fight with a bunch of rag-tag fanatics in Syria and Iraq, this is a global war against Islamic fundamentalism which is at odds with and incompatible with the western world. There are 1.3 billion Muslims. Some surveys suggest that as high as 25% of Muslims agree in some small measure with the caliphate. If only a tiny fraction support it then that’s ten’s of millions. This is going to get ugly fast and will last a long time. It’s a multi generational war in which we, the civilians are the targets. History knows that when your enemy is fighting a religious war against you, there can be no armistice. There can be no surrender, unless it is us who surrenders. To them its win or death, and nothing else. Once this is accepted by the world the war that will commence will dwarf every other conflict in the history of Mankind. The question is when? It’s easier to resist in the beginning than in the end.”

THE WILL TO SURVIVE

Rourke: This post was originally published HERE on ModernSurvivalOnline.

Author: Matthew D. Goebel, Disabled Veteran, Retired US Marshal, Patriot &  Survivor.

I believe the most important necessity needed to survive any disaster or breakdown in society..is the WILL to survive.  I know this because I’ve faced death and the total destruction of what I understood as ‘my life’ and lived to talk about it.  Bullets, Food, Fire, Shelter, Income, Safety and Security, or what we perceive we need to live can change in a heartbeat.
The day I turned in my x-wife for having sex with one of her underage students from a special needs school in New Jersey…My Will to Survive was tested…and tormented.  I lost my home, job, car, kids, retirement, and sanity.  I became bankrupt, jobless, homeless and began my journey of couch surfing. I married and divorced a third wife that tried to have me arrested after a PTSD moment..and me and my two wolf dogs, living out of my SUV… I traveled from NJ, and lived in national parks and couches in several states, WY, CO, KS, OH, PA and Virginia.  I lost 33 lbs and went without and medical care or meds, no guns, just a knife.

I wandered through mountains, deserts, forests, and did a lot of soul searching.  The ONLY thing that kept me alive was the love and admiration of my dogs.  THIS IS A KEY component to survival of man.  Without a dog primitive man could not be warned of danger, assisted in hunting, sleep with assurance, herd sheep, etc.  I fed off their resilience and they fed off my praise.  My Will to keep them alive honed my survival instinct and determination not to perish from this disaster.  After a series of horrible relationships I relied on my wolf dogs to choose who I would trust.  This led me to a strong relationship…the best ever.

I worked out and marketed myself with renewed strength and confidence which led to solid employment. Now I work with the Marines in Afghanistan because I have no fear, literally my Will has turned to hope and fortitude to not just survive but thrive. With my good pay I am recouping everything I lost and realized my new lifestyle as a Prepper…because disaster comes in many forms, BUT with strong WILL and a good Dog I believe we can make it through the hardest of times, like primitive man did, with ‘Pack’ mentality…leading and sacrificing to optimize survival.  How many times have we tried to kill off wolves and they continue to survive? How many dogs have rescued children or fought off an armed enemy to the death to protect its master?  The Relationship between Dog and Man and the WILL to Survive is the strongest of bonds and cannot be broken.
WILL.
