Review: Streamlight 66118 Stylus Pro Black LED Pen Flashlight

Flashlights are a critical item in prepping supplies. Every member of your family should have AT LEAST one flashlight with extra batteries. Over the past few years I have seen a huge performance increase and cost decrease in flashlights using LED technology.

Steamlight is a major brand name in flashlights. Known for their high quality and high performing lights – they are also known for not making the least expensive lights to buy either. This Streamlight 66118 Pen Flashlight ran right at $19.99 with free shipping.

Unboxing the flashlight I found an attractive packaging with lots of details about its operation.

Ready to be opened.

Here are some specs on the Streamlight:

  • Consists of micro optical system which facilitates optimized output and run time
  • Corrosion and has waterproof construction with an unbreakable polycarbonate lens as well as pocket clip
  • Up to 7.5 hours of regulated run-time
  • Bright, 1/2-watt, 30,000-hour high-flux LED
  • 5.3-Inch length
  • Single hand operation
  • Push button on-off located on end cap
  • AAA Battery powered (includes 2 alkaline batteries)
  • Lifetime limited warranty
  • Includes holster

On with the review:

Purpose:

Like any other flashlight it has the purpose to illuminate objects. In particular – it is meant to serve its owner by being able to shine a bright beam in a small, lightweight format.

Construction:

Made of lightweight aluminum and colored black (I believe it is annodized). It appears very rugged. Clip also appears to be very durable – although I have not used it at all. I have been carrying this light in my right pocket for the past 3 weeks and have had no problems.

Method of Use:

The light is turned on by simply pushing down on the rubber push-button end cap. Pressing the button slightly turns on the light momentarily. Pushing the button in all the way until you hear a click will turn it on until the button is pushed again.

Pro’s:

  • Very bright for its size.
  • Compact
  • Long battery life
  • Common battery type
  • No bulbs to replace (LED)
  • Durable – drop tested to 6 feet
  • Waterproof

Con’s:

  •  Can always be brighter

The Streamlight 66118 LED Pen Flashlight

Summary:

I have been so impressed with this flashlight. For several years I carried a classic…..the AA Mini Maglite daily at my job. It did a great job – but I also had to replace bulbs on a fairly regualr basis. Back theen there were not many other options. The Streamlight outperforms the Maglite is almost everyway (as it should – it cost about twice as much). The Streamlight is both brighter and lighter than the Maglite.

Take a look at the picture below to see a comparison between the two.

Streamlight 66118(Left) – – – Mini Maglite (Right)

As you can see the Streamlight shines brighter with a whiter light. I tried taking some pictures to show how they compare at night outside – but they failed to come out. It is amazing how well the Streamlight peirces the darkness – and at some decent distances too (40 yards and more).

Super bright LED

I highly recommend this flashlight – in fact I think I will get a few more to store away.
