Lucid Dreaming | Keep Waking After Becoming Lucid During Naps

Hello,

I am an amateur Lucid Dreamer who began seriously trying to learn to lucid dream several years ago, and after losing motivation about a year in, recently started getting back into it. Lately I have been having mild success attaining lucidity by taking a 2-3 hour nap in the day, setting my alarm to go off about a half hour after falling asleep, and then going right back to sleep after my alarm wakes me up, almost like a shortened WBTB. The problem I've been having, however, is that I find when I become lucid I feel as though I am so close to being awake, that the mere act of attempting to stabilize the dream causes me to wake up. For instance, in my latest attempt ending about an hour ago, after going back to sleep after waking to my alarm, I ended up having a false awakening. After using my RCs to validate the fact that I was indeed still asleep and dreaming, I could almost feel in my dream that I was very close to being awake, and simply attempting to leave my bed inside my dream was enough to actually wake me up, so I went back to sleep, only for the exact same thing to happen two more times. I'd have a false awakening, realize I was still dreaming, then have a real awakening when I attempted to actually leave my bed within the dream, each time feeling as though I was close to waking up. Has anybody else experienced this phenomena before, or have any advice on how I may be able to keep myself from waking in these scenarios? Could the fact that I am sleeping and waking up in such short intervals explain why I am unable to remain asleep after becoming lucid? Any help anybody could offer would be greatly appreciated!

A Tube AM Transmitter In A Soup Can

A standard early electronics project or kit has for many years been the construction of a small broadcast transmitter with enough power to reach the immediate area, but no further. These days that will almost certainly mean an FM broadcast band transmitter, but in earlier decades it might also have been for the AM broadcast band instead.

The construction of a small AM transmitter presents some interesting problems for an electronic designer. It is extremely easy to make an AM transmitter with a single transistor or tube, but it is rather more difficult to make a good one. The modulation has to be linear across the whole amplitude range, and its effect must not pull the frequency of the oscillator and cause FM distortion.

It’s a task [Joe Sousa] has tackled, with his one tube AM transmitter in a Campbell’s soup can. His write-up of the transmitter contains a full description of the problems he faced, and how his design overcomes them. His oscillator is a cathode follower, with the tube biased in class A mode to ensure as undistorted a sine wave oscillation as possible. Modulation is provided through the suppressor grid of the pentode tube he’s using.

The completed transmitter is mounted inside the iconic soup can, with the mains transformer mounted on a removable bottom plate. There is a provision for both loop and wire antennas to be connected.

It is probable that this transmitter falls under the so-called “Part 15” rules for unlicenced low-power broadcasting in the USA, however it should be borne in mind that not every territory has this provision. If you build this transmitter, make sure you’re not going to attract the interest of your local equivalent of the FCC.

This article should have whetted your appetite for tiny broadcast transmitters. How about comparing the one here with a full-sized model?

Thanks [2ftg] for the tip.

Lucid Dreaming | Incongruities VS Dream Signs

So far in both of my lucid dreams I have noticed incongruities with family members (my dream sign)

  • My sister isn't asian
  • My dad isn't a mad man

In both instances I became lucid after realizing this

In reality I'm really good at spotting incongruities and doing reality check if I see something significant (like a dream catcher), but I'm still absent minded. If I see my sister, colleagues etc there's no cue in my head to really question reality. Does this come with time? How many of your dreams are dream sign induced? So far I haven't had any (unless with incongruity)

Lucid Dreaming | LD Consistency & Sleep Cycles

I had a LD yesterday. It was my first one in 5 years (only recently got back into it)

I was doing a course to learn, but got sick of it after a couple of weeks and stopped putting effort in LD.

Yesterday my sleep pattern was unusual though because I had to go to the doctors early in the morning. I woke up at 3/4am and recorded a dream (not much detail or content). Fell asleep again and this was when I go the vivid lucid dream around 6:30am. It included vivid scenes in morocco, floating into space, kaleidoscope moon visions etc

Now I am keen to learn again! However, last night I did not have any results.. only the most basic recall too

Do you think a specific sleep cycle helps with LD? Is this the reason I had such a vivid experience yesterday?

Survival Fishing Techniques You Need To Know

Being able to find food is probably one of the key survival skills everyone should know. There are various ways we can go about it, but knowing how to catch fish is definitely a plus. Fishing can provide you with sustainable food source since there is an abundance of fish almost everywhere. Also, in an emergency situation, catching fish is probably one of the easiest ways to survive.

Moreover, fish is an excellent source of nutrition, and the best part is that they’re super easy to obtain. As we know, fish typically live in large bodies of water such as rivers, ponds, and alpine lakes; however, your best bet should be a stream or river. The most important thing is for you to know how to catch fish and keep them alive, so you don’t use up your energy in vain.

One sure thing is that fish can provide two to three meals each day, but the issue now is how to go about catching them to ensure your survival. Well, the good news is there are a number of methods or techniques for catching fish, but some of them are considered illegal; but let’s face it; you’ve got to do whatever it takes to survive especially when your life is on the line.

Since you’re looking to eat to survive, you’ll have to trump some laws, but I’ll always advise to desist from breaking any fishing laws unless you’re actually dealing with an emergency situation.

First Things First – Bring Essential Fishing Supplies

It’s always an excellent idea to carry fishing supplies as part of your essential survival gear when heading to the backcountry. Since life is typically full of uncertainties, you have to be prepared to face and beat the odds. So be sure to carry a collection of hooks, line, swivels as well as small weights so you can be on the safer side.

Well, the very first thing to do when you find yourself in a wilderness emergency is to locate a water source. The good news is, you’re very likely to find a river or stream while searching for a way out the emergency and that’s your cue to catch some fish.

Look:

The surest way to succeed at fishing is by learning about the behavior of fishes. You need to take out time to observe the movements of the fish; more like where it goes at different times of the day. Well, just like other living creatures, fishes love to stay in places that are comfortable for them as well as where they can get easy access to their prey.

It all boils down to the weather condition of the wilderness. So, if you find that the weather is hot and the water is low, then you’re likely to find your catch in deep shaded water. Now, if it’s cold, I recommend looking for a shallow place where the sun warms the water.

It’s also important to note that you’re likely to find smaller fish at higher elevations, but you might not find yourself in these areas at times of an emergency. The good news is that you’re likely to find lots of large fish in streams and rivers located in the lowlands (valley and foothills).

In a nutshell, it’s really important that you know where the fish are, otherwise all the techniques discussed below will of no use to you. The advice above will give you some clue as to where fishes tend to be. However, it takes some practice and experience to be good at spotting fish.

Fortunately, with advance technology these days, you can use a device that will automatically scan the area for fish, known as the fish finder. It operates on ultrasound technology in which it will emit and receive sound waves to detect fish. Also, it will reveal the fish density of the scanned area so you will have a good idea of where most of the fish are.

Use a Fish Net

When it comes to fishing for survival, the most common type of net to use is the gill net. These nets are more effective during the migratory run of fish. Gill nets work by entangling fish as they try to swim through the openings of the net. The good thing is that you’re likely to catch lots of fish if things go as planned.

How To Use Gill Nets?

Well, you only have to string it between two anchor points and leave it to hang straight down into the water. You can string the net across a stream, pond or lake and there’s no need to place the top of the net on the surface of the water. If you’re using a gill net in a large body of water, you can anchor the net with sticks in the water in a circular manner; so it’ll be more like a fish trap. The net can also be pulled as a seine along a shoreline to catch a group of fish; the fish will be caught when you close both ends.

Angling

Angling is a very popular fishing method that can ensure your survival. This method requires some items from your survival kit. For the most part, you’ll need a hook, line and a fishing rod. You’ll need to attach the hook to the line which supposed to be connected to a rod; you’ll also need to add a small weight so the hook can go down.

It’s also crucial to get a float so the bait can stay at the top of the water and off the bottom (a small piece of bark should suffice). Even if you lost your hook or forgot to bring it along, you can create hooks from materials such as thorns, safety pins, dried bone, etc. Insect and worms are sure to work great as bait; be sure to change to another bait if one fails to get the job done.

Survival Spear Fishing

Another technique of survival fishing technique to consider is spear fishing. Spearfishing is actually one of the oldest methods of fishing that has been around for ages; it’s one of the earliest skills learned by the prehistoric man. The very first thing you should know is that spear fishing requires time, patience and tons of practice to get it right; it’s more like the ultimate blend between a hunter and an angler.

It’s better to use a spear in shallow water so you can get a better view of your catch. The next thing is for you to move the spear as close as possible to the fish and quickly spear your catch! A forked spear is sure to work great for your catch, so try to be creative!

Look:

Piercing through the slippery scales or defeating the slender profile of most fish is not a walk in the park, but it’s still an excellent idea to give spear fishing a shot especially when you have no other means of catching fish.

Poison

Are you in a dire emergency? If yes, you can use natural fish poison to stun or kill the fish. What you should know is that the poison can be derived from a variety of natural materials and they can be used in shallow pools or still waters to kill a substantial amount of fish without much effort and time.

Here are a couple of things that are sure to come in handy

  • For starters, there are some plants which can be crushed and used to release compounds into the water to poison and eventually kill the fish.
  • Using young nut husks from walnuts in large quantities can also poison fish.
  • Lime can also be used to poison fish in shallow pools. You can make this fish poison by simply burning seashells and crushing the same; this shouldn’t take much of your time as long as you’re in the right location.

Use a Fish Weir

Ever heard about a fish weir? Fish weirs are obstruction which you can create to guide or trap fish to your desired location. A weir could be a circular fence, wall or large funnel that’s primarily designed to lead fish into your trap. The good thing is that the conventional styles of weir construction can still be used in your wilderness emergency situation. For the most part, weirs can be constructed from stone or wood; the stone provides a permanent construction while the use of stakes provides for semi-permanent installations. You can also place nets and baskets at the end of the weirs to trap or contain the fish. Moreover, a weir can make your spear fishing efforts a whole lot easier!

Preparing Your Fish

Well, cleaning and cooking your fish might not seem like a fishing technique, but it’s an important phase of the process. I mean, you do not want to end up getting food poisoning after your big catch. The truth is that you can eat all parts of fish, but it’s still a great idea to remove the internal organs. There are two steps to preparing your fish including:

Cleaning Your Fish

Alright. The very first thing to do is to gut your fish. Gutting your fish is super easy, in fact, the process is exactly as it sounds! Just get your knife and cut from the anus of the fish and go all the way to the belly, and finally to the bottom jaw. Just be careful not to puncture any of its internal organs while making the incision. You can choose to remove the head or simply use your knife to severe the connection between the internal organs and head of the fish.

Once you’re done with that, the next thing is for you to reach in near the head and gut out the internal organs. This should be a piece of cake as the body cavity will be empty in no time. Now that you’ve peeled out the organs, you only have to wash the body cavity out with the water.

Cooking Your Fish

Now that you’ve cleaned your fish, you’re ready to cook it and enjoy a well-earned meal! The good news is that there are a couple of ways to cook your fish even in a survival situation. Here are a few ways to go about cooking your fish and enjoying it to your heart’s content.

  • For starters, you can get a stick and use the same to impale a whole fish. Once you’ve done that, you can cook it over an open fire. This is the fastest and easiest way to cook your fish but boiling it is also great especially if you’re looking to enjoy its value to the fullest.
  • As I mentioned earlier, you can cook your fish by boiling, and the best part is that you’ll get to save the juices for broth (just be sure to boil it with the skin).
  • You can also use clay to cook fish; remember, you’re in a survival situation! Just pack fish into a ball of clay and bury the same in the coals of a fire. Be sure leave the fish until the clay hardens. At this point, you only have to break open the clay ball to collect the cooked fish. You can also smoke or fry it especially if you plan to eat the fish later. So how can you prepare the fish for smoking? Simply cut off the head; remove the backbone, and you’re good to go!

Note: You should know that fish is bound to spoil quickly after death. So, it’s crucial to clean and cook your fish immediately after catching it.

Conclusion

And that’s it! With all that being said, we can conclude that fishing is an excellent way to survive in the backcountry. The best part is that catching fish is not difficult once you learned the right techniques to catch and harvest fish. Aside from fish being a sustainable food source, fishing is a pretty good skill to have while dealing with emergency situations – though you will most likely need to improvise, utilizing materials around you to fish.

Walther PPQ vs. HK VP9

by Nicholas

It’s safe to say that the striker-fired pistol market today is dominated by Glock (as it has been for sometime), and while there’s no denying that Glock made readily available quality guns, there are a variety of great pistols out there. If you want a pistol other than Glock, you have many options. Two of these options are the Walther PPQ and HK VP9.

The PPQ and the VP9 both stand out from the Glock in a number of ways. While the basic design is the same as the Glock, both the PPQ and VP9 feature improved ergonomics that could make them more appealing to different shooters.

Let’s go over the PPQ and VP9 in detail so you can understand the main differences between the two pistols.

walther ppq

Walther PPQ

The Walther PPQ is slightly older than the VP9, being released in 2011. The PPQ is simply an updated version of their previous P99 series of pistols.

While the P99 was striker fired, it was unique in that the first trigger pull is long while all subsequent shots are short. The P99 also features a decocker button to put the pistol back to the double action pull.

The P99 was quite successful in Europe, but noticeably less so in the United States. It seems that American shooters prefer their striker fired pistols to have a single consistent trigger pull like the Glock.

A video going over the Walther PPQ:

Walther picked up on this and released the PPQ, which unlike the P99 is not a DA/SA design, and has a consistent trigger pull. However, this trigger is also the main hallmark of the PPQ: it’s no ordinary trigger, at least not when compared to the Glock.

Whereas other striker fired pistols such as Glocks will have a little bit of creep before the gun can be fired, the PPQ’s trigger is noticeably lighter and crisper. This allows the shooter to not only have a more pleasurable shooting experience; it also allows them to fire faster follow up shots.

A major advantage to the PPQ is its ergonomics, particularly in the grip. The engineers of Walther spent much time (as in years) in developing the ergonomics for their P99 and PPQ pistols, wanting the gun to have a natural point of aim and for it to feel as if it melts in your hand.  Ergonomics are entirely based on one’s personal preference, but most agree that the ergonomics to the PPQ are superior over the more block-like feel of the Glock.

Today, the PPQ is available in four calibers: .22 LR (12 rounds), 9mm Luger (15 or 17 rounds), .40 S&W (11 or 13 rounds), and .45 ACP (12 rounds).

Heckler & Koch VP9

The HK VP9 is another highly regarded striker fired pistol and one of the main rivals to the PPQ.  As with the PPQ, there is a lot of history in the VP9’s development.

What makes the VP9 special is that Heckler & Koch actually built the original polymer framed striker fired pistol 12 years before Glock: the HK VP70.

The only issue with the VP70 was that it was expensive, and admittedly not the best design in the world, so it didn’t see much success. Glock perfected making the polymer framed striker fired pistol, which is why they were so successful.

HK went on to mainly make hammer fired pistols, eventually producing the HK USP and later the HK P30 with improved ergonomics over the USP. They were still itching to get back into the striker fired market, however, so they continued their VP series and produced the VP9 in 9mm (15 rounds) in 2014 and then the VP40 in .40 S&W (13 rounds) in 2015.

A video exploring the Heckler & Koch VP9:

The HK VP9’s ergonomics and looks closely resemble that of the HK P30. The trigger on the VP9 is improved over the Glock and closely rivals that of the PPQ.

There are two major appealing points to the VP9 in terms of its ergonomics. The first is the addition of what are called ‘bunny ears,’ or short polymer protrusions (on the right hand and left hand sides of the slide). These allow the shooter to grip the VP9’s slide firmer to rack it, should one ever be in wet conditions.

The other major plus of the VP9’s ergonomics is that not only can the back straps of the grips be swapped out like with the PPQ, but the sides of the grips can also be swapped out. This means you can literally make the VP9 as comfortable as you want it to.

PPQ or VP9?

So the main question is: should you go with the PPQ or the VP9? Both pistols are high quality, come from reputable manufacturers, and underwent years of development. So it’s safe to say that you can’t go wrong in choosing either pistol.

In terms of ergonomics, it’s entirely up to you as to whether you prefer the PPQ or the VP9. To determine which one you like more, you’re just going to have to hold them for yourself in a sporting goods store.

The biggest point of contention between the PPQ and the VP9 however, is in the trigger. When the PPQ was released, Walther marketed it as having the best pull of any production striker fired pistol. When HK released the VP9, however, they also claimed that the VP9’s trigger was the best on the market.

Again, whichever trigger you personally like comes down to your preference. A general consensus has seemed to form, however, that the VP9’s trigger is superior on the take-up while the PPQ’s trigger is superior on the actual break.

Both pistols also utilize a Picatinny accessory rail for adding lights and lasers. They are roughly the same size and weight, although the VP9 is just a tad larger. Both are suitable for concealed carry or home defense. In addition, price between the PPQ and the VP9 is about the same, though usually the PPQ can be had for just a tad less.

This video shows a contrast between the PPQ and VP9:

Conclusion

When it comes down to it, both are top-tier German manufactured pistols that were the culmination of many years of development. Both are going to do exactly what you ask of them, so in that regards, you won’t be disappointed in either. Whichever pistol you choose should be based on which one you prefer when handling or when shooting on the range.

The PPQ and the VP9 are great alternatives to the Glock series of handguns because they both offer a number of out-of-the-box improvements. That’s not to say that they are superior in quality to Glock, but it is to say that you may prefer them for the reasons this article has gone over.

Lucid Dreaming | waking myself up for a WILD

What I really want to try next to lucid dream is a WBTB, I sleep so deep it's almost impossible for me to do a DILD despite trying for months which is all i've tried so far except for a few nights trying WBTB. I've come so close to sleep paralysis but always fall asleep. If I could set my alarm clock and let it wake me up it would be much easier because I fall back to sleep almost instantly. My problem is everytime I set my alarm clock to any time at night I will wake up about ten minutes before the alarm goes off and be wide awake. How can I wake myself up and still be tired? Any tips on how to stay awake would also be appreciated. :D Just realized I misnamed the title sorry about that

Lucid Dreaming | HELP can't lucid dream!!!

I'm one of those people who will loose interest fast and get discouraged easily and just can't lucid dream. I'll try for a month and then get discouraged and give up. I can't do the reality checks all day thing either no matter how hard I try to remember to. I can't tell between reality and not because I sleep very deep and my dream could be clear as day but my head is too fuzzy. To make everything even more impossible I can't wake up and try to go back to sleep because I HATE being woken up and will fall back asleep without even remembering i'm supposed to be trying to lucid dream. Any suggestions on what could help me stay exited about lucid dreaming because I REALYYYY want to learn. Also what would be a good technique to try?
Thanks in advance:D

Apartment Homesteading for Preppers

by Heath

There are many things to worry about when you have your mind set on preparing for the worst of outcomes. One of these problems is providing food for yourself when the SHTF, and that only compounds on itself when you live in the city. Undoubtedly there are advantages to living in a city, but how can you have a successful homestead in a city? To be even more specific – Is it even possible in an apartment?

This article will outlay all the basics you need to know to get you started on your homesteading adventures in your apartment. You will learn life hacks to get the most out of your space and gain the knowledge you need to have meaningful yields from your urban homesteading adventures.

The Garden

Your first step is developing all of your growing areas into something worth growing vegetables in. This includes any window space, kitchen window, or balcony if you have one. If you have a balcony with one of those sliding glass doors, you have a jackpot regarding growing space in an apartment.

Any windows you do have will need to be cleared away of furniture as this will be your only way to get sunlight to your plants. You will also have to keep your window blinds or curtains open for the entirety of the day to get the little amount of sunlight that you do get. This can raise the issue of people being able to see what you are doing, but the risk is a necessary one.

Once you have designated the growing areas; you will need to plan out how you are going to use your growing pots, vertical gardens, staggered gardens, hanging baskets, trellises, planter boxes, and balcony pots. All of these are available for you to maximize your growing space.

vertical pots herbs on balcony

Any wall that gets a decent amount of sunlight will beg for a vertical or staggered garden. The vertical garden is built as one unit stacked on top of each other so you can grow in many beds within the same amount of space. Staggered gardens would be best utilized on the balcony or next to a sliding glass door. If you have a big enough window, it could be used from the wall next to the window and staggered out in front of it. Staggered gardens are best described as the descending rice fields you see in the mountains. It’s a great use of space as you can have different levels of dirt for various plant’s needs in one area.

You will also want to set up your trellises along walls for vine plants you may choose to grow. If your space is too limited for trellises, you can always use hanging baskets for growing them. Other plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, and leafy greens like spinach do well in them as well. The best part is harvesting as all you need to do is pick them off like apples in a tree unless you are growing greens. It’s important to note that you want to keep an eye on how much sunlight you are getting with hanging baskets as they tend to get a lot which could be detrimental to your leafy greens.

If you have a balcony, you will want to maximize your growing space on it because it will most likely be the area where you receive the most amount of sunlight. This is a great opportunity for planter boxes and balcony pots. There are many options for you to choose when it comes to these, so the best advice is to find something solid and built to last. You will find out quickly if it’s cheap when you come out in the morning to find your planter box spilled out on the ground.

The balcony rails can also work as a trellis. You may need to add some cross sections to it, but it will work perfectly for you if that is an option you need.

It’s important to stress this one more time as it will save you a lot of headaches. Do not buy cheap pots, planters, or materials for building. You need these things to last you a long time, and if the SHTF you might not have the opportunity to replace something that has broken. It’s better to fork out the few extra dollars on the thicker better pots, than the flimsy ones that you can break with your hands if you tried hard enough.

The Soil

You will need soil for your garden, and hopefully a lot of it. Unfortunately, you will have to buy this probably, or if you are patient and resourceful enough, you can find someone who is selling or getting rid of their top soil. Either way, you will need it unless you are going a hydroponic/aquaponic route.

Once you have the right amount of soil, you will need to keep the microbial bacteria happy, and that means providing organic material to the soil from time to time. Without a doubt, the best way to do this is composting.

With compost, you provide the soil with all of the vital and subtle nutrients we find in healthy soil. It’s the only sure way of accomplishing this without having to spend a dime. The only problem is the limited space in the apartment.

For making compost in an apartment, you will need a compost bin to put all of your table scraps – excluding meat and dairy – into. These bins vary in sizes, and a lot of them will have an easy way to turn it so oxygen gets to the microbes so they can break down the material into compost.

Ideally, you will want to “hot compost” as opposed to “cold compost.” This simply means that the mixture of nitrogen-rich content(Roughly 30%) to carbon-rich content(Roughly 70%) is at the perfect ratio for the bacteria to do what it does best. When done correctly, you will be able to have usable compost in a fraction of the time. It typically takes “cold compost” to be ready anywhere from 6 months to a year! This is a massive difference to hot compost which can be ready in as little as two weeks.

There are other factors to hot composting that need to be addressed if you want to be successful. You have to ensure that the compost is always moist. It should be as moist as a wet sponge. The next thing you will want to make sure you do is to “turn” the compost. This is essential because the bacteria is aerobic, meaning it needs oxygen to thrive and work. If you can compost within your apartment, it should be in a bin that is easy to flip or turn.

If you are unable to make your own compost; you will have to buy it, or you should expect to get less and fewer yields over time, and eventually degrade the soil to something that won’t give life anymore. There are many varieties out there, but the best option is anything organic. You really don’t want to use Miracle-Gro, or anything similar. They will grow big plants, but the additives they are introducing into your soil are harmful to a healthy lifestyle. Finally, in case of the SHTF scenario, make sure you have a surplus of compost if you have to buy it.

gutter

Water Collection

Collecting water is one of the most important aspects to homesteading, and for the needs of an apartment homesteader, it becomes vital to your garden’s survival. You will also be extremely limited to what you can do in regards water collecting. The simplest method at your disposal if you have a balcony is setting up gutters to collect water. The outlet will have to go into a bucket, but bringing out as many plants as possible when it is raining, and collecting what you can from the gutters will help tremendously.

Your other option is creating a water collector from a tarp, four poles, and a bucket for the water collection. All you need to do is set it up when you know you will have rain. The four poles suspend the tarp above the bucket, and at the low point, a hole in the tarp will pour water into the bucket.

This is the easiest way to collect water. You will undoubtedly turn some heads by doing this, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives for this one.

Hydroponic/Aquaponic

I won’t be going into too much detail here, but suffices it to say you can get either of them going in your apartment for relatively cheap.

These systems use a growing medium instead of soil to grow plants. With the hydroponic system, you will need to add additives to your water for the plants. While the aquaponic system uses fish to fertilize the plants, and the water is filtered and recycled back to the fishes.

Aquaponics stands apart from hydroponics on the fact that you can also raise fish for consumption, and not have to pay for those additives that a hydroponic system needs. Both will require electricity to run, and the aquaponic system will need more because of the aerator for the fish tank.

This can be a potential problem in a SHTF situation and we have outlined some ways you can make your entire hydroponic or aquaponic system work without electricity in the article stated previously.

Alternative Energy

Due to your limited space, there isn’t much you can do in this regard. Your only option is to install solar panels on your balcony – if you have one. This could potentially take up valuable growing space, and the growing space should always take priority. The best advice is to hire a professional to assess your situation and tell you your options, or if it is even worth it.

You could also install a wind generator on your balcony, but the output probably won’t be great. Experiment with these options and get some professional advice if you really want to collect solar or wind energy for your power use.

rabbit

Raising Rabbits

Because you live in an apartment, you won’t be able to raise much of anything in regards to meat. You have fish from the aquaponic system, but you are very limited to what you can keep after that. Chickens are completely out of the question so you really only have one option. Rabbits.

Mostly kept as pets, they are a good source of protein when there is nothing else. They are very easy to keep and take care of, and the investment isn’t too steep considering the situation. You could potentially feed them entirely from your garden if you are capable of growing enough produce.

The best part is their birth rate. It’s a common saying, “They breed like rabbits.” This statement is entirely true. The gestation period for rabbits is roughly 30 days, and they tend to give birth to a litter of 4-12! The problem then becomes, “Do I have enough space for all these rabbits?”

As the chicken is the ultimate homesteader animal; the rabbit is arguably the ultimate urban/apartment homesteader animal.

Closing Thoughts

Turning your apartment into an urban homestead will be a challenge with ups and downs to learn from. What is important is to use this article as a guideline and not the end all to truth. There are always innovations and new techniques to try when it comes to homesteading, and this holds true to urban homesteading. Even if you are in a one bedroom apartment, you can turn that into a homestead, and be prepared for the challenges that the future may throw at you.

Lucid Dreaming | Trouble with False Awakenings

So lately I've been having a lot of issues with false awakenings. Sometimes I'll even think it may be a dream but the circumstances in the false awakening are usually very similar to daily real awakenings. Have tried doing reality checks every morning when I wake up but can't seem to remember to do them when I wake up from a dream still dreaming. Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated.

A Full Stack GPS Receiver

The usual way of adding GPS capabilities to a project is grabbing an off-the-shelf GPS module, plugging it into a UART, and reading the stream of NEMA sentences coming out of a serial port. Depending on how much you spend on a GPS module, this is fine: the best modules out there start up quickly, and a lot of them recognize the logical AND in ITAR regulations.

For [Mike], grabbing an off-the-shelf module is out of the question. He’s building his own GPS receiver from the ground up using a bit of hardware and FPGA hacking. Already he’s getting good results, and he doesn’t have to futz around with those messy, ‘don’t build ballistic missiles’ laws.

The hardware for this build includes a Kiwi SDR ‘cape’ for the BeagleBone and a Digilent Nexus-2 FPGA board. The SDR board captures raw 1-bit samples taken at 16.268 MHz, and requires a full minute’s worth of data to be captured. That’s at least 120 Megabytes of data for the FPGA to sort through.

The software for this project first acquires the GPS signal by finding the approximate frequency and phase. The software then locks on to the carrier, figures out the phase, and receives the 50bps ‘NAV’ message that’s required to find a position solution for the antenna’s location. The first version of this software was exceptionally slow, taking over 6 hours to process 200 seconds of data. Now, [Mike] has improved the channel tracking code and made it 300 times faster. That’s real-time processing of GPS data, using commodity off-the-shelf hardware. All the software is available on the Gits, making this a project that can very easily be replicated by anyone. We would expect the US State Department or DOD to pay [Mike] a visit shortly.

Of course, this isn’t the first time someone has built a GPS receiver from scratch. A few years ago, less than 1-meter accuracy was possible with an FPGA and a homebrew RF board.

A Remotely Tuned Magnetic Loop Antenna

If you are a radio amateur, you may be familiar with the magnetic loop antenna. It’s different from most conventional wire antennas, taking the form of a tuned circuit with a very large single-turn coil and a tuning capacitor. Magnetic loops have the advantage of extreme selectivity and good directionality, but the danger of a high voltage induced across that tuning capacitor and the annoyance of needing to retune every time there is a frequency change.

[Oleg Borisov, RL5D] has a magnetic loop, and soon tired of the constant retuning. His solution is an elegant one, he’s made a remote retuning setup using a stepper motor, an Arduino, and a Bluetooth module (translated here). The stepper is connected to the capacitor via a short flexible coupling, and tuning is performed with the help of a custom Android app. We’d be interested to know what the effect of a high RF field is on these components, but he doesn’t report any problems so it must be working.

He’s posted a video of the unit in operation which we’ve posted below the break, if you’ve ever had to constantly retune a magnetic loop you will appreciate the convenience.

We’ve only brought you one magnetic loop antenna in the past, whose special feature was that it is portable.

Lucid Dreaming | Aware in Nrem - What was this?

So after a 15 min WBTB last night, I settled into a MILD mindset with the hope that it could become a WILD. I lay on my back and repeated 'is this a dream' over and over ( as i usually do)

Anyway, after a short time i was aware that i was lightly snoring. I lay there completely aware that im snoring and therefore must be asleep. So im thinking that I have fallen consciously aware into non rem!

As i lay there i determined that if I am indeed consciously aware as my body is sleeping then my sleep cycle would soon transition to REM and a dream would encapulate me in the traditional WILD sense

So has anyone else had this awareness in Nrem? Also if i had not been snoring then I would have felt as though I was just lying there awake.

Thoughts :-)

How Many Firearms Do You Really Need?

by Nick

How many guns do you really need to own?  This is a question that many gun owners ask themselves or ask others. Unfortunately, it’s a question that has no definitive general answer.  Let’s analyze it in greater depth and see if we can find the right answer for you.

More Guns or Less Guns?

There are respectable arguments to own as many guns as you can. Guns are like tools in a toolbox, in that each tool and each fulfills a different role, so with more guns, you cover practically all of your bases you can think of. Owning more guns could also mean you’ll be owning more calibers, meaning you’re not limited in what you can pick up and use during an SHTF or ammo shortage situation. You also have backups in the event that you lose a gun or if any are damaged.  And since you can always sell guns for higher prices later (depending on the model), you could be making a valuable investment.

On the other hand, there are solid arguments against owning multiple guns. Many would argue that it’s more important to pick only a handful of guns and train with them extensively, spending the money that you would have otherwise spent on more guns for ammunition instead.  If you own a variety of guns in different calibers, you’ll have to stockpile far more ammo, and you’ll only end up having less ammo per caliber.  Furthermore, if you have more guns, you won’t get as much training time in with each one and you’ll ultimately be less of an expert with your particular weapons of choice.

Regardless of which side you’re on, here’s something that most of us should agree on: simply owning more guns does not make you more armed.  The old saying goes that you should beware of the one gun man, because he more than likely knows how to use it. In other words, you can be adequately armed with only two or three guns in your arsenal versus twenty or thirty, or even two hundred or three hundred (and really, you only need that many guns if you’re a collector or plan on outfitting your own personal army).

So how many guns do you really need?  Here’s the answer: it varies by the individual.  For someone who likes to collect different historical firearms, that person will never be able to own enough.  But on the flip side of things, for someone who doesn’t necessarily likes guns but sees the value in owning one maybe for home defense and family protection, only one would suffice.

That being said, there is at least one fact that we should all be able to agree upon: being trained in how to use your gun in a true life-or-death situation and having a healthy supply of ammunition is more important than actually owning more firearms, at least for those who plan on using their weapons for defensive use.

Let’s discuss this next and then cover the basic types of guns that you will need to cover your bases.

Training

What do you think is better: to own one gun with plenty of ammo and be expertly trained in the use of that gun, or to own two guns but have limited ammo and training for both? Obviously the first option is more desirable.

Training and practice is something that is hugely overlooked, and that’s unfortunate.  The vast majority of people who purchase firearms over the counter are not experts in using guns.  They’re ordinary people who what to use them for self-defense, hunting or target shooting.  Subsequently, they buy that gun and a couple of boxes of ammo, run a magazine or two through at the shooting range, call themselves good and never touch that gun again.

Big mistake. Owning a firearm is a huge responsibility, and firing a few rounds through your weapon at the shooting range will not make you any more effective with it in a true life-or-death situation. So really, you haven’t made yourself or your loved ones more protected.

Firearms training requires dedication and repetition.  You want basic actions you conduct with firearms to become drilled into you as muscle memory.  Let’s say that your pistol has a malfunction while you’re shooting it.  Would you be able to clear that malfunction in less than a second, or would you instead look at the gun in bafflement and try to figure out what’s wrong?

Doing the second of those would get you killed in a gunfight, but clearing the gun and getting back in the fight will increase your chances of survival. You need to conduct drills where you master how to conduct different actions. In order for something to become muscle memory, you will need to complete at least one thousand repetitions of it. This means that for clearing a malfunction, you need to simulate that malfunction and then clear the weapon one thousand times. It requires time and consistency, but the reward is that by the end you’ll be able to complete these actions without thinking.

The same goes for actions such as holstering and re-holstering your weapon, reloading, flicking off the safety (if applicable), the grip and firing stance you personally use, shooting while moving, transitioning between weapons, and so on. Your life could depend on it.

Ammunition

Having enough ammunition is also hugely important, because without it, your gun is nothing more than a club.

How much you need is another big question in the firearms world with no consensus for an answer.  In general, though, you should be safe with at least one thousand rounds of ammunition stored away per caliber.

That may sound like a lot, and it’s certainly not cheap.  However, one way you can accumulate this much ammo over time is to make it a habit to buy just one to two boxes of ammo a week.  Slowly but steadily, your stockpile will begin to grow.

To put this into perspective, every box of pistol ammo holds 50 rounds.  So if you buy two boxes a week, that’s one hundred rounds for that week and four hundred rounds for the month.  In just two and a half months, you’ll have one thousand rounds of ammo stored away for that particular caliber.

What Guns Do You Need?

Earlier we talked about how owning guns is like owning tools, in that each gun fulfills a different role. Therefore, it makes sense to at least buy the guns you need to cover each of the different roles you will need a gun for.

There are 6 types of guns that you will need to buy if you want to have each and every one of those bases covered, and those five are: .22 rifle, shotgun, defensive rifle, hunting rifle, concealed carry pistol, and duty pistol.

Why these six?  Let’s talk about each one in order:

.22 rifle

.22 Rifle: Every gun collection needs at least one .22 rifle, no matter how small.  A .22 is perfect for plinking, small game hunting, and for teaching children or newbies how to shoot thanks to its low noise and recoil.

Shotgun: The shotgun, specifically a 20 gauge or 12 gauge, is perhaps the most versatile firearm there is.  Load it with birdshot for bird hunting or target shooting, buckshot for home defense, and slugs for hunting big game if you want to.

Defensive Rifle: Your defensive rifle needs to be chambered in an intermediate round such as 5.56x45mm or 7.62x39mm, and should ideally be a semi-automatic with a large magazine capacity simply since you’ll have a higher rate of fire with less reloading to do.  That being said, a lever action chambered in a round like .30-30 could suffice for this role as well (should you already have a lever action in your possession).

200 .308 winchester

Hunting Rifle: Your hunting rifle needs to be chambered in a larger caliber than your defensive rifle because it needs to deliver greater knockdown power at longer distances.  There are a countless number of calibers that would fulfill this role, including .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, 7MM Remington Magnum, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Winchester Magnum.

Concealed Carry Pistol: Your concealed carry pistol is your ‘always gun’, or the gun that you always keep concealed on your person. As such, it needs to be comfortable for you to keep hidden on your body while also being reliable in a self-defense situation.  .32 ACP, .380 ACP, .38 Special, and 9mm Luger are popular caliber choices for a concealed carry gun.

.45 acp handgun

Duty Pistol: Your duty pistol needs to be larger than your concealed carry pistol with a higher magazine capacity and chambered in a respectable caliber such as 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.  Some people like to merge their concealed carry and duty pistol into one (for example, the Glock 19 holds 15 rounds of 9mm and yet is compact enough to conceal for most individuals, fulfilling both purposes).

Conclusion

The number of guns that a person needs differs by the individual based on their priorities.  Hopefully this article helped guide you to what your priorities need to be, and helped you realize that owning more guns isn’t always the right path to take.

Phase Modulation With An FPGA

There are two radio modulation schemes everyone should know. Amplitude modulation changes the amplitude — or ‘volume’, if you will — of a carrier frequency and turns all radio into channels owned and operated by a church. Frequency modulation changes the pitch of a carrier frequency and is completely run by Clear Channel. Amateur radio operators are familiar with dozens of other modulation schemes, but there’s one hardly anyone touches. Phase modulation is weird and almost unheard of, but that doesn’t mean you can’t implement it on an FPGA. [nckm] is transmitting audio using phase modulation on an FPGA (Russian, here’s the Google Translatrix).

This hardware is just an Altera MAX10 board, with a single input used for serial data of the audio to be transmitted, and two outputs, each connected to a few bits of wire for a quarter-wave antenna. No, there’s no output filter or anything else except for a few bits of wire. It’s an experiment, chillax.

The Verilog for this project receives an audio signal as serial data in mono, 22050 BPS, 8-bit unsigned samples. These samples are fed into a dynamic PLL with phase shift in the FPGA. Shifting the phases also changes the frequency, so [nckm] can receive this audio signal with the FM transmitter on his phone.

Is this really phase modulation if it’s being received by an FM radio? Eh, maybe. PM and FM are closely related, but certainly distinguishable as modulation schemes in their own right. You can grab [nckm]’s code over on the gits, or check out the video demo below.

Lucid Dreaming | The MILD Struggle

Alright, so I have a bit of an issue. I've been trying MILD the last few nights, and this morning I thought it was working.

BUT, I have one issue: My crazy loud air conditioning. It is really loud, and it makes it to where it is obvious that I am not in a lucid dream.

Now, aside from the air conditioning, I thought that the Mild I had going on this morning was working. I was relaxed, I had my mantra, everything thing was going smoothly. About 10 minutes into repeating the mantra, I starting feeling so much more aware about everything around me. There was almost like a light was shining above me, and it started to feel like I was transitioning from my eyes being closed to being in a dream-world. Of course, I don't know what that feels like because I've never had a lucid dream. About 5 more minutes of that light thing happening, I could still hear my air conditioner, so it still felt as if I were awake. I did the reality check, and surprise surprise, I was still awake.

Can someone explain to me if I'm doing something wrong? I've been trying MILD for about 5 nights now, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the air conditioner is keeping me aware at all times.

8 Things That Can Go Wrong in the Next Disaster

by Ryan

We constantly discuss all the different skills and strategies that can help somebody survive in a SHTF scenario.  However, when it comes right down to it we can boil everything down to a handful of things that can spell disaster. Sure, there is a possibility that you get eaten by a bear or starve to death.  However, there are much more likely ways to perish.

When I look back on the survival challenges that I have completed, there was almost always something that caught me off guard. These are the things that could cause a person to die in a survival situation.  In this article, I am going to discuss the most likely ways that a survival scenario can go South.  I will also cover the ways you can avoid these pitfalls.

scared

Panic

When a person is not prepared for a survival situation, it is very common for them to panic.  This is the primary reason that people lose their lives in these scenarios.  Panic prevents a person from rationally analyzing their situation and formulating a plan for success.  Survival is all about adapting and strategizing.

It is a natural reaction.  We are all built with a fight or flight mechanism when our lives are on the line. This pumps adrenaline through our veins.  It is important that you learn to control this instinct and use it to your advantage.  When you can calm your mind and think your way through the situation, you will likely come out on top.

Hypothermia

If you look at actual cause of death in survival situations, hypothermia kills more people than any other single threat.  This is the process of your body shutting down as your internal temperature drops below 95F.  One of the most dangerous aspects of hypothermia is that people think it can only happen in freezing conditions.  The fact is that hypothermia can happen in just about any environment around the planet.  Without protection from the elements, the average person can only survive three hours in cold or wet weather.

Hypothermia can set in with temperatures as high as 60F if you are wet.  That means that it might be 90 degrees during the day in the jungle or desert, but if you sweat through your clothes then night temperatures can take you out.  In environments where it rains constantly, you can bet that hypothermia is an issue.  Staying dry is incredibly important.

You really have four tactics for avoiding hypothermia.  The first option is having the right clothing.  If you have the right clothing, you can survive most potential hypothermia.  The next is fire.  Fire can keep you both warm and dry no matter how cold it gets.  Staying dry is a third strategy.  Avoiding sweating and staying out of the rain is vital.  Finally, shelter can help keep you dry and warm.  Knowing how to build survival shelters can save your life.

dehydrated

Dehydration

As a person loses moisture, it can start to shut your body down.  Dehydration can cause cramps, weakness, dizziness, heart palpitations, and eventually death.  The problem is not typically finding water.  The problem is finding water that is safe to drink. You also must factor in how much water you lose by being active or being in the sun all day.  This adds to your risk for dehydration.  Without water, the average person can only survive for three days.

To stay hydrated, you must know how to find and purify water.  This means knowing how to trap rainwater, dig wells, build filters, and boil water.  This also means having the right tools with you to get the job done.  You should always have at least two ways to purify water.  For me, this means a way to start fire for boiling and either a filter or iodine tablets.  With these tools, you can easily stay hydrated.

Injury

I know from personal experience that injury is very likely in survival situations.  This can happen in several ways. For me, I split open my head on a low hanging branch during my first survival challenge.  I was able to stop the bleeding and clean the wound, but it does not always go that way.  Cuts can become infected easily and infections kill in the wild.

I have personally seen several scenarios where survivalists have cut themselves with knives, hatchets, or axes.  It is so easy to lose control of the blade or to fall and cut yourself. There are plenty of scenarios in which you can lose enough blood to die if the cut is bad enough.  Even minor cuts can get infected and end your life.  You must be careful with exposed blades.

Slipping and falling is very common in survival situations.  The more you become hungry, tired, and dehydrated the more you lose your coordination.  Just walking through the woods can turn into a twisted ankle or a busted up knee.  In the worst scenarios, people have fallen to their death.  Your best bet to survive is to slow down and be careful with every move you make.  You also must have some first aid knowledge and preferably some first aid supplies.

Ingesting Bad Food or Water

There are several ways that you can kill yourself with the things you put in your mouth. One of the most common ways is by drinking unpurified water.  This can cause you to be infected by bacteria, microorganisms, and even parasites.  While they may not take effect for several days or even weeks, they can cause vomiting and diarrhea that quickly leads to death by dehydration.

Another common mistake is eating plants or mushrooms that are poisonous.  Wild edibles are an excellent source of food in the wild, but only if you know for what you are looking.  Poisonous plants and mushrooms can kill you in a matter of hours, or they may just cause vomiting and diarrhea that leads to dehydration or starvation.

Finally, you may ingest animals or fish that are not safe to eat.  Many animals carry bacteria or parasites.  If those issues are not cooked out of the food, it can make you sick very quickly.  You may start vomiting within hours and could be dead in days.

The best ways to get past all of these issues is to know how to purify water, identify wild edibles, and properly cook food.  This knowledge is all fairly basic, but requires studying to be proficient.  With the right information, you can get past all of these challenges.

Allergic Reactions

Many people underestimate the potential risk of allergic reactions on the human body.  Whether the source is food, insects, or plants, you can stop breathing and die if the reaction is severe enough.  I have had reactions during survival challenges where plants have caused my throat to swell and restrict my breathing.  You must be careful with which anything you might come in contact.  Know your allergies and keep medicine with you if needed.

girl lost in woods

Getting Lost

You may have the best plan in the world to survive, but if you get turned around and lose your camp you are done. I have seen experienced survivalists go on a one hour hike and get lost to where they had to start over.  It is important that you know strategies to navigate without getting lost.  If you leave your camp, you must mark your trail so you can make your way back home.  You must have a general understanding of your area and of the cardinal directions.  With this knowledge, there should not be any reason for a person to get lost.

Other People

Understand that in SHTF scenarios, people can be your biggest threat.  Even those you trust may turn on your when things get bad.  They could take your resources and potentially even harm you or your family.  If things go bad on a large scale, over 90% of the population will not be prepared.  They will try to use for to take what they need to survive.

Your best option is to try and get away from large population centers.  Blend it and get as far away as possible.  If you set up a camp, keep it hidden.  Use regular patrols and scouting to ensure nobody else stumbles upon your camp.  Have weapons handy and be prepared to defend your camp if other people do find you.  Keep your guard up and trust nobody.

In Conclusion

When you are trying to survive, the things that might kill you are not always obvious.  If you have the right preparation and skills, you should be able to get through all of these issues.  You must be realistic about what you will face in the wild.  Have your pack ready.  Bring the right clothing. Have the right tools.  Have a plan that will keep you calm and let you get through the day.

While the right tools make everything easier, staying calm is all about knowledge and training.  If you know what you are doing, there is no need to panic.  If you know nothing, panic is the only option you have.  With the right knowledge and training, you should have a plan for each of these potentially life threatening scenarios.  When the time comes that you must make it happen, you should have a blueprint to get out alive.
