11 Personal Safety Odds & Ends

I learned from a young age the world was not a safe place. There were people who were not just willing, but eager to hurt you. Some of them were your own family. Others were your peers you saw at school every day. Others were strangers or minimal acquaintances. Nowhere felt safe.

When I was a boy, there was always a roof overhead, and food on the table, and we celebrated holidays. I went fishing and on picnics, and there were presents and cake at the correct times. There was the appearance and trappings of normalcy. But I grew up with violence, witnessing it, being subjected to it, or threatened with it as a regular occurrence. It got worse as I got older, until it became an everyday occurrence.

I began to study human behavior, particularly when the human mind malfunctioned. I learned the theoretical basis of what I had been experiencing since I was five years old, attaching nomenclature to the realities of addiction, violence, hatred, cruelty, sadism, bullying, abuse and neglect.

Then I chose a career field where I practiced what I had learned in theory and experienced in real life, counseling addicts and alcoholics in their struggle for sobriety, and career criminals looking for a way out of the life, or trying to dissuade young people from getting into the life.

I also sit with the victims of criminals, who have experienced rape, molestation, incest, assault, theft, and domestic violence, and are now traumatized and trying to shut off the world with drugs and alcohol.

As an adult, I learned how to protect myself and take care of myself because sure as fuck no one else was going to do it for me. I have taken what I have learned the hard way and pass it on through teaching, writing, and counseling crime victims.

I want to present here some of the miscellaneous habits I have developed over the years that lend to personal safety, and what I have culled from many hours of learning from experts on self-protection. Some are about mindset and attitude; some are about behavioral changes and habits.

I realize a lot of this will be obvious to some, but for others it will be new information. I have also made a lot of general statements, and have left a lot of stuff out. This is not intended to be comprehensive, or all inclusive, but rather food for thought.

Value yourself enough to protect yourself.

This is the psychological foundation of self -protection. If you do not value yourself, it will be easy for others to victimize you, and you will not have the will to protect yourself. Those who grew up being abused will typically develop the mindset that they deserve it. They will expect it and accept it as normal.

Work to break out of this type of thinking, through psychotherapy, confidence building activities, good self-care, and surrounding yourself with people who value you and treat you well. Do not tolerate mistreatment from anyone, not matter who they are. Respect yourself and distance yourself from anyone who is shitty to you.

Never show fear, doubt, or hesitation.

Never look like a victim. Weakness only encourages aggression. Displaying vulnerability draws predators to you. This becomes a cycle. The child that is abused and maltreated at home goes to school looking hurt, scared, anxious and tearful.

They are going to be spotted quickly by the bullies and singled out for abuse. Abused and bullied children quickly become demoralized and vulnerable to victimization by strangers or associates.

Listen to your intuition or deductive reasoning.

Never second guess yourself. If something feels wrong, then it’s wrong. Period. Get out of wherever you are, or away from whoever is near you as quickly as you can. We have a very good inner sense of danger, but we choose to ignore it because we don’t want to over react; we don’t want to be rude.

What if we are wrong and we are embarrassed? People will think you are a weirdo or paranoid. Who wants to be around a rude, embarrassing paranoid weirdo? That fear of what others may think of us and how we will present ourselves can cause us to ignore our intuition.

Be unpredictable.

Vary your routine. There are many ways to get to and from work or school every day. There are many different places to get gas and coffee, groceries or to do laundry.

Mix it up, taking different routes to and from places, departing and arriving at different times, and going to different places.

Keep your mouth shut, your hands to yourself, and your eyes to yourself

One of the best self-defense lessons I have learned and which has stuck with me for 25 years came from a third degree Black belt in Okinawan Karate & Kung Fu. It was not how to kick, punch and strike.

Paraphrasing as I recall it, he said, “keep your eyes open and your mouth shut. It will keep you out of 99% of all violent situations”. I have practiced this ever since, and kept out of 99% of potentially violent situations. The few and far between tight spots I have been in since then have been because I didn’t follow this dictum.

Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Never start a conflict with someone which can escalate to violence. Always let the other guy be the asshole. I would add keep your eyes to yourself. There are some people who are so sensitive, unstable, altered or eager for a fight that all they need is a prolonged look.

Don’t live, ride, or work in a pig pen, or look like a slob.

Keep your home, car, and office and yourself clean. If your surroundings are dirty, cluttered and disorganized, it is often a reciprocal reflection of your life and habits. If you look like a slob, as way too many Americans currently do, it can encourage predators.

Predators intuitively look for people who are unkempt, slovenly, and sloppy. This can reflect lower socio-economic status, addiction, and being accustomed to deprivation and violence. This makes a predator see you as someone they can take advantage of, or someone who will be safe to victimize because they are in the life as well.

If you have been in the life of addiction, violence and crime, part of getting out of it will be changing your appearance. Active addicts, dealers, and low-level habitual criminals are very good at spotting others who are in the life. Someone neat and clean, and squared away looks like they have their act together. This also helps you carry yourself with confidence.

Always lock the door when leaving your home.

I am aghast at how many people I speak to in rural areas, or who are now urban dwellers from a rural area, who leave their home unlocked when they go out. Don’t make it so easy for the bad guys.

Park your vehicle front end out…

…backing into the parking space. This will enable a fast getaway if necessary.

Never sit with your back to a door.

When you are in a café or other public place, select a seat which gives you the best view of the entire establishment, close to an exit. Observe the people around you, and their energy for lack of a better word. Is there anyone who looks tense, hostile?

If a stranger approaches you…

…look at their hands, do not let them get too close, and do not engage if they look suspicious. A stranger has no business getting within five feet of you unless you are in a crowd.

Lastly, Learn from experts

You can never learn enough. Here are the ideas of some of the most reliable experts on self-protection that I have been following for as long as 20 years.

  1. The Gift of Fear
  2. The Little Black book of violence
  3. The Big Bloody book of violence
  4. Meditations on Violence
  5. Facing Violence: Preparing for the unexpected
  6. Scaling Force: Dynamic Decision making under threat of violence
  7. Street E & E
  8. Violence, blunders, and fractured jaws

Be aware there are those who teach ineffective methods that may give you false confidence, and will get you hurt, or worse. For something enlightening, watch this video:

How to Pre-filter Water (and Prolong the Life of Your Water Filters)

by Megan

There’s nothing worse than coming down sick from drinking unfiltered or poorly filtered water. The average water filter, depending on the water filtration method, lasts anywhere from 3 to 6 months or as much as 3 years.

The reason water filters wear out and need cleaned or replaced is because over time the debris and contaminants from your water build up and they are no longer able to filter effectively without being cleaned or replaced.

Although there are some really good water filters and water purifiers on the market today, prefiltering drinking water can not only improve your water quality but can prolong the life of your water filters. Prefiltering your water is especially important if you are trapped in a survival situation where your water source is really dirty and filled with debris.

Methods of Water Filtration

Water filters can be portable, like a LifeStraw or Sawyer Handheld, or in your home they can be a water pitcher, installed under your sink directly connected to a water line, faucet-mounted, or countertop coolers connected to your faucet. There are many different methods of water filtration. Some water filters use a single method of filtration, whereas other water filters use multiple methods to filter water.

  • Distillation
  • Activated Carbon
  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Deionization
  • Ozone
  • Carbon Block
  • Water Softeners
  • Mechanical
  • Granulated Carbon

Why Prefilter Water

Water filters are designed to remove impurities from your water and thus make it safe to drink. Even the cleanest mountain spring water can become contaminated by things such as leaf debris, glacial sediment, silty water, decaying or dead animals, or even a rainstorm that stirs up the mud.

But water filters can become dirty and clogged after being used multiple times to filter really dirty water. Over time, all of these contaminants can cause your water filter to work harder and to wear out sooner. Using a prefilter as the first step to cleaning your drinking water can help prolong the life of your water filters. The benefits of using a prefilter for water include to:

  • Help chemical water treatments work better.
  • Clean unclear or murky water before using a UV water purifier.
  • Extend the life of a pump filter and increase flow rate

When to Prefilter Water

By now, just about everyone knows the importance of clean drinking water to human survival. It is one of the primary things that you should plan for whether you are traveling across the countryside, hiking in the woods or even just going for a run in your neighborhood.

Without fresh, clean drinking water, you put your health and your life at risk. Water filters come in all shapes and sizes and many of them do a great job of removing impurities from your water and making it safe to drink. But even the best water filters need a little help to keep them working effectively.

What to Use to Prefilter Water

There are many, many different things that you can use to prefilter water. What you use will depend on where you are, what you have available to you, and what kind of water filter you have.

DIY Pre Filters

Shoe store nylon footies like the ones you’ll find for free in a shoe store can be used to prefilter your drinking water. Simply fit the nylon footie over the end of your straw filter or other water filter method. You can also let the water drip through the footie and down into your second container and then purify it. The footie will remove bugs, dirt, and other large debris and will help prevent your water purifying straw from clogging up.

Pantyhose work very similar to the nylon footies you find in the shoe store only pantyhose made of a tighter, finer mesh which means even smaller particles are filtered out.

Coffee Filters make great prefilters for drinking water. It removes a lot of the larger debris and particles from your water. It’s easy to use because all you have to do is pour the water through the coffee filter and it does the work for you. Coffee filters are lightweight and won’t take up much space in your backpack. To use a coffee filter with straw-type filters, simply attach a piece of the filter over the end of the straw using rubber bands.

Bandanas are another way to prefilter your water to remove any large debris or contaminants from the water. Using a bandana to prefilter your water helps to prolong the life of your water filter by increasing the length of time between backflushes.

Cheesecloth can be used as a prefilter for your water too. Simply allow the water to drain through the cheesecloth into your Sawyer filter or another container. Once you’ve strained the large debris and particles from your water, you can use the water purifying method of your choice.

Standard Fish Tubing and Fish Bubblers can be attached to a simple syringe to prefilter water from a puddle or other poor water source. The fish bubbler prefilters the water as it is pulled into the tube and to the syringe. Use the syringe to push the water into your Sawyer pouch or other water container. Once your container is full, you can use a water filter to further purify the water for drinking.

Store Bought Pre-filters

For those who don’t have the DIY gene or if you simply want a better quality prefilter to prolong the life of your water filter, you can buy a prefilter in the store. We’ve listed several different items below that have been used to prefilter water by other preppers.

Nylon Rosin Press Filter Bags

1 Micron Filter Bags designed for industrial filtration are a great way to prefilter water and prolong the life of your water filters. Typically made from polypropylene or a polyester mix, these bags are designed to filter out very fine particulates. Because these filter out very fine particulates, in a pinch you could skip using a water filter and simply boil or chemically purify your water prior to drinking it to remove any viruses and other contaminants.

Alum powder (Aluminum Sulfate) can be used with murky or muddy water to prefilter it. The Alum reacts the particles in the water and causes them to settle to the bottom as an almost gelatinous substance. Pour the water off the top through your water filter, leaving most of the sediment on the bottom.

Aquatic Experts Filter

Filter Bags are heavy canvas bags designed to filter the sand, mud, and other debris out of your water. These bags do not purify water. Water that has been filtered through a millbank bag will still need to be filtered using a water filter or boiled or purified using a chemical method. Be sure to thoroughly soak the bag in water, massaging it and squeezing for at least 5 or 10 minutes. If you don’t soak the bag, it could take hours for water to filter through. Millbank filter bags are rare so if you can get your hands on one of these, hang onto it.

water garden filter

Inlet Filter Screens made for Pressure Washer Pumps fits fairly tight and works well with the Sawyer Squeeze. The inlet filter screens have better flow and less waste than using a coffee filter.

Which method to prefilter water have you already tried? Do you have a favorite way to prefilter water that we didn’t mention above? Let us know in the comments below.

Portable Ham Antenna Gets A Workout

Ham radio isn’t just one hobby. It is a bunch of hobbies ranging from chatting to building things, bouncing signals off the moon, and lots of things in between. Some of these specialties, such as supporting disaster relief or putting odd locations “on the air”, require portable operation. To encourage disaster readiness, hams participate in Field Days which is a type of contest that encourages simulated emergency conditions. So how do you erect an antenna when you just have a few hours to set up a temporary station? [KB9VBR] shows how he and his friend used a Chameleon Emcomm III portable HF antenna for Winter Field Day. You can see the video review, below.

Unlike some portable antennas, this one is almost 100 feet of wire (73 feet of radiator and a 25 foot counterpoise). The entire affair is meant to be put up and taken down repeatedly.

Unfortunately, the guys didn’t like the setup — it is always going to be tough to manage that much wire. They did like that the Teflon-coated wire didn’t hang up in the trees as easily as some wire. Overall, they still gave it an 8 to 9 out of 10. It seemed to work well, at least in two directions. The way they set it up, they were not getting out to the east and west.

According to EMCOMM, the antenna takes 15 minutes to erect, although that might not take into account the extremely cold Wisconsin weather. The antenna is rated at 100 watts for all HF ham bands and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. Should be fairly easy to stuff in a backpack for hiking.

We expect most radios will want a tuner for this antenna to minimize VSWR mismatch. We’d love to see a network analyzer plot of the antenna in some common configurations.

This Satellite Finder Can Watch Amateur TV

Setting up satellite dishes can be a finicky business. To aid in the alignment of these precision antennas, satellite finders are often used which can display audio and video feeds from the satellite while also providing signal strength readouts for accurate adjustment. However, these devices can also be used in interesting ways for more terrestrial purposes (Youtube link).

Using the DMYCO V8 Finder, [Corrosive] demonstrates how to set up the device to pick up terrestrial amateur streams. Satellite reception typically involves the use of a low-noise block downconverter, which downconverts the high frequency satellite signal into a lower intermediate frequency. Operating at the 1.2GHz amateur band, this isn’t necessary, so the device is configured to use an LNB frequency of 10000, and the channel frequency entered as a multiple of ten higher. In this case, [Corrosive] is tuning in an amateur channel on 1254 MHz, which is entered as 11254 MHz to account for the absent LNB.

[Corrosive] points out that, when using an F-connector to BNC adapter with this setup, it’s important to choose one that does not short the center pin to the shield, as this will damage the unit. This is due to it being designed to power LNBs through the F-connector for satellite operation.

By simply reconfiguring a satellite finder with a basic scanner antenna, it’s possible to create a useful amateur television receiver. If you’re wondering how to transmit, [Corrosive] has that covered, too. Video after the break.

Lucid Dreaming | First ever LD (random) after a year's effort. What now?

I have been systematically working on lucid dreaming for almost a year now. I have almost 300 days of very detailed dreams written. Throughout different periods, I tried all common methods, and lately was attempting setting a good intention and DEILD.

Yesterday, I had my first ever lucid dream, but it happened randomly. It confirmed everything I've read about - DCs will kick your butt if you tell them they're not real, or it's a dream, the feeling of extreme clarity, difficulty controlling your actions etc. But I, today in particular, did no reality checks, not even MILD or setting any intention. I did have especially vivid dreams outside of this one though.

Now I'm wondering where to go from here, since none of the things I attempted really worked for me so far, but that my first LD happened seemingly random.

If curious, this is the dream:

--

I’m at my old work. We had just kicked our CEO out (which we haven’t). I see the core team is working downstairs. I go up to 2nd floor. I see our CEO’s empty desk. I say to myself, ‘wow, he’s gone’. Then I run into the marketing guy he had brought on. He asks me ‘Am I next to go?’. I tell him I don’t know. Then I go back downstairs from the other end. I see two of my co-workers, working. Then I have this extreme confidence and clarity that, ‘wait a second, I don’t work at this place anymore, this is absolutely a dream’. It is as if suddenly the movie becomes real. I get giddy and run up to my co-worker. I tell him, ‘this is a dream, who cares what I do?’ and I start laughing about it. Immediately both of their faces distort, their eyes get pinkish and they get upset. They lift me up from my arms and start to carry me away, while I’m laughing and trying to take all in. They are also tickling but I don’t feel ticklish in the dream (I do in real life). Then I wonder, now I know it’s a dream, how the hell will I wake up? But eventually I do.

Lucid Dreaming | Let's get my Hands on MILD! - 1 YEAR test

Hi!

As I said in my post in the Introduction Zone, my main problem until now has been lack of consistency and changing techniques too frequently. That is now going to drastically change!

For 1 YEAR I'm going to concentrate on this personal Mnemonic Induced Lucid Dream (MILD) version I feel very much drawn to. Even if I initially fail to see results, I'm going to keep working on it without giving up, until I master the art of becoming lucid in dreams.

Daytime
- Presence/Self-Awareness practice with Hands trigger:
The goal is to eventually mantain permanent self-awareness. In order to achieve this, I'll use my Hands as a trigger to "wake up" when I'll inevitably come back to a non-lucid mindset: whenever I notice my hands during the day I'll come back to a lucid/self-aware mindset and try to mantain it for as long as possible. That will also train my Prospective Memory.
- MILD mantra, repeated occasionally throughout the day: "When I see my Hands, I remember that I'm dreaming."

Before Bed
- "Awareness watching Awareness" Meditation
This will reinforce the effects of my daytime Self-Awareness practice.
- MILD mantra coupled with Visualization of myself watching my hands and exploring a dream setting.

Awakenings
- Whenever I wake up (naturally during the night or with a 5 seconds alarm I put after 6 hours of sleep), I'll attempt to Keep Still and vividly Imagine my Hands (clapping or rubbing them).
- If I don't manage to enter directly the dream, I'll just reinforce the same MILD intention and get back to sleep.
- After my actual wake up alarm (usually after 7 hours), I'll recall any dreams I had writing them down in my Dream Journal (detailed for LDs and only key words for Non-LDs).

That's basically it! I'll consider myself consistent if I can mantain everyday the basic routine Self-Awareness+MILD, while trying to implement all of the steps most of the nights.
Every tip or critique is very welcome, I thank you in advance, but for 1 year I will not change the basic structure of it.
